Well after a lot of researching and short listing and changing then changing again I came to understand that a sub £1k closed back version of the HD800S is not entirely feasible. Consequently I am switching my thoughts to open back where there is a wider choice and some good deals price wise going on.
I think I have the 2 I am interested most in but I am not familiar with either of them so wonder if anyone here has some views or thoughts?
They are the Beyerdynamic T1 (2nd gen) and the AKG K812.
As far as I can see they have both had mixed reviews in that some people love them and some very much don't love them. Does anyone have experience of them both and feel they can give an outline of their strengths and weaknesses.
The sound qualities I value most are neutrality, imaging/soundstage with good extension in the bass and treble. I am definitely not fond of a bass dominated sound or one where the treble is rolled off.
Thanks.

Neutrality K812 >> T1 Imaging soundstage differs from person to person. There is no metric for this. HD800(s) beats both in pinpoint imaging. Bass extension K812 > T1 treble peak: T1 has a higher treble peak, both have a peak. I find the K812 peak less annoying. T1 has a warmer/fuller tone and relatively somewhat sucked out upper mids.

When I started looking I had thought a closed back would be best for where I want to use them. There doesn't seem to be an ideal answer which has HD800 attributes as far as I can see and I guess t also makes sense that finding such a headphone is not so likely. That is why I decided to look to open backs instead where there is a wider choice. Hence the T1 and 812 as they appear as close to HD800 attributes and can now be found at quite well discounted prices. From what you say it appears the 812 might be the better choice for me. Have you any listening experience of the AKG K872 just in case it is still a closed back option? Thee are very few good reviews and they appear largely to be Professional sound sources which are looking at music in a quite different way.

Alas, haven't heard nor measured a K872.
IMO neither the T1 or the K812 have better properties than the HD800. HD800 with some EQ is still king in this price segment to me.

Dadracer2, if you're in the EU Eurozone, I'd like to point you to my post in the for sale forum, where I have an as-new in original box K812. With an extra cable (which are expensive because of the Lemo connector on the headphone side. But it is a nice connector). If you decide on the AKG and are interested, please send a PM.

Thanks Shiro, I will check it out and have a think. Do you know what delivery costs to the UK would be while we are still in the EU for the moment!!!
