Anyone with the capability might find it interesting to use iPlayer or whatever to take a look at this morning's Sunday Brunch on Channel 4. In the technology section they used something called a Reuben's tube (I think ) to demonstrate what sound waves of differing frequencies would look like if you could see them (by making them 'visible' sort of ) Dave.

A Rubens tube can show standing waves in a tube. There can be many, they are multiples and have to do with the length of the tube. If you were to play an audio-signal you might only see some of the flames 'flicker' a bit. See my favourite guys play with one:

That's a great demo. I guess they've played with sine and square waves to get different types of flame throwers!!
Great way to light a fag ....... Face over the tube with fag in mouth .... put in the request ..... play the note G ..... fag's lit.
