I really do like Denon headphones. Not perhaps the most accurate, but they are voiced with a healthy bass response, which (for me) make them more speaker like on the head. So for real musical enjoyment, I do use the Denons a lot.
I have the D2000 which I adore. This has a gorgeous, full bodies sound. I also have the D1100 which I'm not as keen on because the bass is just too much for me. It's like a DT770 on steroids.
I have also used the better Denon earbuds in the past which are excellent.
Today, I tried the AH-D510 and it's cheap as chips. They can be had around £30 so we're in the Senn portable range here.
This headphone is plastic (how surprising at theis price!!) but it is comfortable and very light on the head. Now I have read on the internet about the poor build quality of these and the plastic support, but the adjustments for the head are METAL and it's those that take to stretch - not the plastic!!! I have also read reports of creaking - yes, if you wear them too tight - loosen them off and it goes away. (It wasn't that bad anyway)
Looking at them, you'd think they're pretty and maybe won't sound as good as the D1100. I can tell you, they are better!!! It's really annoying because they are cheaper. Going between the two, I now realise it's not just the bass of the D1100.
In fact, the D1100 has an odd treble timbre. It's actually quite harsh in comparison to the D510. The 510 sounds more natural to me.
Yes, it's not as well built as the D1100 but it's half the price. The bass is more under control and the treble is more natural and the old Denon sound that I like so much is there.
IMO, the D1100 is the black sheep of the family. Way off balance tonally and they've tried to make it into a blunder buster. The 510 is way more balanced sounding and feels like a 'quality' portable headphone that's bigger than your normal portables, but you get this big hearted sound that Denon are so good at.
I quite like it.
