Hey there, I would like to write some reviews about the headphones I own(ed). I reviewed this one while I still had it and I'm basicly reviving that review on here. Gotta say I have one big difficulty here, in the Dutch langauge headphones a singular item as "a headhone" instead of "headphones" like it's written in English. So it's possible I make a misstake here, forgive me
When I was a 16y old boy my Brother-in-law pulled my name out of the hat and had to buy me a 12,5 Euro chrismas gift. I asked for a cheap pair of headphones. He went to the shop and didn't like it at all, so he went to another shop and bought me this 40 Euro Pioneer SE 650 instead. Which was a good thing cause for a 16y old these were exeptionally good sounding headphones. Thus good that two friends bought the same after listening to mine. Let's start off:
Inner felt got torn, took it out.
Made in Japan, back then it didn't have this ring to it is has now.
Stock earpads, only minor damage.
Build quality:
Now you have to know these have not been treated well since the nineties. They've spend some years on my working bench in the garage, covered with tools and sanding dust. So one would imagine they would fall apart after 10 years like that.
One day I pulled them out of there and took the dust off. Adjustment still worked fine, some scratches but the earpads where only slightly damaged. They've got these volume controlls on their cups and one of them doesn't work as it should anymore. It only goes from max volume till slightly less. But since I never used those controlls anyway it didn't matter.
The cord is connected dual entry and is still stock, only the jack has been changed.
The earpads are non-changeable because they're glued in. But they're in great shape besides gotten thin throughout time.
Like we know now: the Japs knew how to make good stuff !
Comfort:
Clamping force is not tight, but the thin earpads make my ears touch the inner plastic. I don 't like that, starts to hurt after a while. Also the dual entry is not my favorite thing, the cord seems always to be in the way. The thing that made it popular back then was because the cups were turnable for DJ style monitoring. Even recently I found an ebay ad selling them for 35 Euro's being advertised as "searched DJ headphones".
Sound:
As I wrote in the introduction, back then it were the best sounding headphones I'd ever hear, cause the only comparisment I had were cheap walkmen HP and an old Sony my brother bought 10 years earlier.
So I plugged it in in my Yamaha receiver and gave it a new run in 2013. Verdict:
Bass: Total lack of bass, and I mean almost nothing !
Mids: Clear mids, pronounced without ever being too much.
Highs: Very recessed highs, way back in the sound spectrum.
Overall: A non fatigueing sound which lacks lots of frequenties. Narrow soundstage and stereo image is also off cause of the poor sound quality.
Conclusion:
So not a pair of headphones to look for, that's why I've put it up for sale and even got a 17,50 Euro bid on it. So now it's in somebody else's hands and I hope he enjoys it. It gave me many years of good use and I still consider it one of my most valued gifts ever. At the time that is
It was ahead in build quality but poor in sound quality.
