I found a place in Norwich that had the Demons on demo. AH D600 and AH D7100. In a word .... not too good. One retails round about £175 and the other was over £200. The more expensive one wasn't as extended sounding as the cheaper one which has this really obvious stitching in white over the black pads. Build isn't great and they look better in photos than in real life. The cheaper one is a bit more open sounding than the dearer one, but I wouldn't buy them. The old D2000 is way better. Very disappointing on Denon's part.

The decline is because Fostex made the drivers for the old Denon line and their partnership expired

I wondered who made the new drivers but cannot find info on it. The membrane looks quite different from the usual stuff.
The new - custom designed free edge nano fibre drivers' indeed don't have 'Foster' on it which the Dx00x series did. The only pictures around do not seem to disclose how the diaphragm is centered but judging from some picture they use some flexible stuff below the driver cone. It seems the part from the voicecoil towards the edges can flap around freely as that has no suspension at all. There must be something between that edge and the edge of the driver otherwise acoustic shorts would eat all bass. Maybe it explains the dip around 100Hz though.

Yes ..... I have the D2000 which I have is excellent. These are nowhere near and cost way too much imo for what they deliver.
My guess is that Denon will be leaving the headphone market if this is all they can offer. I would like the more expensive D5000 or D7000 but I'm not willing to fork out for them. I'd rather exchange some of my headphones than buy yet more at the prices demanded for them.
I start to get a bit jittery when a headphone hits £300 or so. Especially second hand. If the 7000 had remained, I may have considered one!!
The more expensive Denon was so bass heavy and lacked sparkle that I thought it had a fault. I don't mind lad back headphones but these were horizontal.
