After thinking about doing this for a long time I've tonight completed the job. I couldn't see much difficulty in the project so I gave it a shot, carefully thinking my way through every stage, mulling things over, improving my intended design until I thought I had an answer to all the problems I could anticipate.
I've replaced the standard tonearm on my Tecnics SL1210 turntable, from gimbal assembly to cartridge (everything in between) with a carbon fibre assembly. I did not take any pics as I went along as I was not convinced that I would want to put it up for criticism but in the event I'm very happy to share it with anyone who might be interested. I can provide pics of the finished and fitted tonearm and am happy to provide a sketch and details of it's construction. The tonearm is dead straight with all the angular offset being the angle between the arm and the head shell. The resulting SQ is head and shoulders above the standard Techie fitting and that itself is not known for being crap so great result. It's definitely the best my Techie has sounded, tighter and lower (less monotone) bass, better separation and 'air' between the sound constituents, in short, an all round improvement.
The constituent parts (dimensions to follow if of interest) are a piece of thin carbon fibre sheet, two lengths of carbon fibre tube, one of which fitted inside the other leaving an air gap between the two, a length of thin carbon fibre rod and a small quantity of J-B weld to hold it all together, total cost a bit more than £20 IIRC, might be a bit more.
Over to you.
Dave.
