These little ear blocker are so useful with portable gear and I must admit, I do like to use them since they can sound extremely good and are generally built for the job. That means very high sensitivity and if you get a good one, a really great sound.
My preference is for a slightly lifted bass since then, they do actually give the feeling of a big headphone.
The one I use a lot both on stage and for music is the Sennheiser ie8. It can be a bugger to fit with the small plugs that come with it, so I used some Triple Fi buds, made by another company that are a fraction longer and made of harder rubber, so they grip better. Eventually, I had a custom fit made so I could use them for working situations. They have an enormous bass and never go shrill in the treble; even at high volume. They are a great earbud but for some, way too expensive for what they are used for.
I also use the Yuin OK2 which is an open bud. A bit crisper in the treble than the Senns and quite a lot cheaper. They're ok (as the make says). Nothing brilliant but do quite a nice job.
I also have the Klipsch X8 and X10. Extremely good. Lighter in the bass with quite an edgy treble in comparison to the Senns but they do fit beautifully with their very distinctive buds. Not a great deal between the two but nicely made and sound very good.
There is also the Sennheiser CX series which are bass led and extremely good for the money. The CX400 II is my favourite in the series. I revisited this little gem today because nothing else was handy, and boy, does it do a good job. I remember the CX300 was also good, but the 400 has more 'poke' in its sound. The bass is this really healthy, rounded, full sound and the treble never goes nasty. (Just like the ie8) Some find the buds a bit shallow for fit. I use the bigger ones and cram them in my ears. The angle that you hold them at before pushing them in is critical but once you get it right, the bass is brilliant.
I'm not particularly sensitive to soundstage, and to be honest, I think with earbuds, you're wasting your time.
All of these are gems and the best at each end of the budget for me are the ie8 and the CX400 II. Both amazing ittle buds that make you wonder how on earth so much sound comes from such tiny units. The bass on the CX400 II is stunning and you can actually hear the 'twang' in strings on a bass guitar.
Funny thing that buds are kind of sidelined in favour of full sized or on ear types, but I love my buds and their convenience for music on the move. Great when you go shopping (and don't want to be there!!)
I think the CX400 II retails around £40. Not too cheap but well worth it.
One other thing that puzzles me - how on earth do people get accurate measurements from these things? A dummy head I guess with ears to put them into?
