I had a play around with different tips for my Sennheiser ie8's. I use them for performing (amongst others - but I like the Senns). I normally use some custom fits, where I had a mold taken of the insides of my ears and the tips were made for me. So the seal is absolute, with no problems. well worth the squirting of stuff into my ears, although a bit uncomfortable.
Since I have the CX series for testing now .... I tried the earbuds that come with them on my ie8 to compare with the custom fit.
I also tried the harder tips that come with the Triple fi's which can be bought separately. (They're see through, not black, but the plastic is harder.)
The Triple Fi tips were really easy to get a seal with (which can be a problem for the standard ie8 tips - they're a bit too shallow for some) However, so get a good seal, you do have to give them a strong shove so some may not like that. I think that this is because the plastic is harder and so it has to be really firm in there to get that seal. Anyway, the sound is great, but after a while, the pressure on the inside of your ears can start to irritate.
Now the Senn CX400 buds are really soft. (So easily ripped) I put the mediums on and fiddled for ages to get a seal. Then it sounded great. However, changing to larger tips and pushing more gently got a seal much easier and that eliminates the need to push them too deep. (Although they can go in further and still keep a seal) Again, the sound is really good.
So is it worth a custom fit? IMO, no it isn't if you can get something comfortable. I can't hear that much difference. The only thing is that customs won't come out so easily (which is important for live work) but the sound isn't really much different.
I'm not sure what the Senn ie8 comes with, but the CX400 buds are really comfortable as long as you judge the size of your lugs properly. In my case, the mediums work but going up another size made a lot of difference in the ease of seal.
I'll be back to the customs, but it is worth playing around with these little bud tips since the difference in comfort between the Triple Fi and Senn tips means that you don't have to be taking them out to relieve the pressure on the inside of your ears.
I might see if I can get the Senn tips onto the Klipsch IEM's too. (Mine are also custom fitted though)
