A really good prog rock band introduced to me by the 'Grand Wazoo', Wilf of the European Perspective. Wilf is actually a guy called Dave Elliot who hosts the show.
He is amazingly consistent in his shows and every two weeks or so, I get something new from this guy. He has a terrific understanding of prog rock and folk. He finds some really interesting music and each show is an epic at three or so hours.
Anyway, he was playing some music from Karmakanic which is really good. A few of their albums can be sampled from Spotify, (another great service) so after hearing Dave's show, I had a listen to three Karmakanic albums.
A really good band verging on rock and jazz with the obligatory mellotron. Really worth a listen as is Dave's, 'The European Perspective' which is excellent and in reasonable quality at 160kbs too. One of the best music podcasts around.

I have to say... I have four of their albums now and like all of them. A really good band. Lovely, well thought arrangements, with some interesting ideas for their 'concepts.'Entering the Spectra' si about a little man in his little home becoming anything he wants to on the web'. Sounds familiar? Karmakanic are a progressive rock / metal group founded in Malmö, Sweden in 2002 by bassist and keyboardist Jonas Reingold. Their music is marked by sharp dynamic contrasts, sudden full stops, complex timing and meter changes, abstract lyrics, and long periods of instrumentation. Karmakanic are similar sounding and often compared to classical progressive and symphonic rock bands including Yes, Genesis, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, but also combine this sound (albeit more gently) with the synthesizers and distortion more common of modern progressive rock and metal bands such as Ayreon, Dream Theater, Symphony X, and The Flower Kings. Dramatic stuff. Music quite often, with a message and an element of jazz rock influence on occasions. Really good players too. The bass player even performs part of Bach's Cello suite, perfectly.

Hi Syd. Dave is great. he's a guitarist of old and is a really nice bloke. Always responds to emails as well and he doesn't even know me or who I am. Another guy he introduced me to was Guy Manning. Another really lovely chap who used to work for the Tangent and is now going it alone as a song writer, working from his garage!! Unfortunately, finance means that Guy's albums are not always as polished as I'd like but I love his songs. He has more of a love it or hate it type of voice but some lovely material. Actually, Guy joined RG to reply to me. I'd love him to turn up here too to discuss the ideas behind his albums. He's fascinating and Dave tends to do long interviews with him when his new albums come out. (at about 1 a year) Guy, come in if you are actually reading!!!! Dave is also a great fan of Tinyfish - a brilliant semi-pro band. I met them but they don't know they met me!! European Perspective is a long show with loads of info on new albums and bands. Dave is a mine of information and he doesn't know it, but I'm a great fan of what he does. It takes a lot of effort and work to put that show together and I don't think he gets as much thanks as he should. It can be directly downloaded through itunes if you have an Ipod or ..... www.thedividingline.com/podcasts/european-perspective/

That's great, thanks Ian. I have a couple of Guy's CDs but I haven't played them recently, I must dig them out and have another try, the recording quality did deter me a bit but I remember at the time you described his limited setup. It's a shame. I'm currently wrestling with the wonders of iTunes, my version (recent) doesn't seem to have the search facility that a Googler say it should have I'll get there though. I've been to Dave's site directly, he certainly puts a lot of effort in. I originally pressed send on this reply about 40 minutes ago, it didn't appear so I have now added another bit and will push the button again. (Just in case two eventually get posted). Syd

Syd, on ITunes:
Press 'Itunes store' on the left box, if you have it set to show the 'sidebar' on the tab up top called 'View'. When it goes to the store, press 'Podcasts' at the top. Top right hand corner - search 'The European Perspective' Choose the picture with the purple picture named 'The Dividing Line' Then you should be there!!
Dave works very hard and does get a bit fed up I think sometimes, although he loves the music.
Guy Manning is working on a very limited budget and I did say to him that some of the samples he was using for his albums were a bit poor. The string sound in particular, but his most recent album is greatly improved. He did mention this in his last interview with Dave concerning the new album which is a bit more polished.
I just like the songs and what they're about. He's more concerned about the songs than the recordings!! Trouble is, someone else will get the hands on them and re-record perhaps? I have all of his albums. Some are rougher than others though. Plus the fact that some don't like his voice, poor chap!!

My problem was that I didn't have the 'view' option! I've had another root around Google and in iTunes 11 you use ALT+b to get that menu bar, unbelievable. So I'm now able to see it, the site where I found the tip had loads of posts seething about 11. I seldom use iTunes so didn't realise it was missing! Thanks again Ian. Syd

ITunes isn't great Syd. I hate it. It's also very slow.
Why on earth Apple couldn't have allowed us drag and drop I don't know. It's such a fag loading everything onto Itunes before you can export to the Ipod.
Rockbox is around but not for my 6g Classic yet. I think it goes to 5g but I'm also quite nervous of installing it. Never used it but I hear its a lot better than the firmware on the Ipod. I'm not sure whether it allows you to avoid Itunes - I think it does.

Linked to this group and a great combo - 'Power of Two'. I'm listening to a live album called 'Live USA'. Stunning.
they finish the show with 'Afterglow' from Genesis. Such great memories.
