Has anyone been to Tenerife and hired a car? I'm looking for a car out there with air conditioning for three weeks but don't want to get ripped off like I was twice in Spain. You pay for the car and when you get there, the companies start piling on all kinds of things so that the price almost starts to double!!! Basically looking for a car where I can pay for it before I go and they don't pile on loads of extras when I arrive. Anyone done a car in Tenerife?

I've hired a car in Alicante - Star Rentacar and I don't recall any hidden gotchas - but it was about 7 years ago. Just had to return it full of fuel.

Thanks Dicky,
In Alicante, on arrival I was faced with all kinds of extras that I was given the impression were compulsory and then some that weren't compulsory but if I didn't have them, I could be faced with a big bill.
For instance, I was told that the car was insured but the floor wasn't. Knowing that I was going down to the desert region and the possibility of poor roads was pretty high, I had to pay a lot for extra insurance for the floor of the car!!
There were also other things that weren't covered, particularly with insurance that meant fully comp wasn't exactly fully comp.
It really annoyed me - plus we had a long wait for a car even though it was booked before I went.
The whole experience made me very suspicious of foreign hire companies.

What I have found effective is to ask the hotel or accommodation owner for their advice on car hire. We do this every time we go to Crete or Northern Cyprus. They may well get some commission but you have someone close to involve in case of bother and the car hire company will be much more careful about upsetting a local hotel than they will about upsetting a passing tourist they will never see again. Works well for me, so far . Dave.

Thanks Dave. I guess I could ask the owner of the place I'm renting. I'm there for three weeks so going to want to move around or I'll get wrinkly skin in the pool.

I always use Economy car hire although I am not sure if they operate in Tenerife. Never stung me for extras like so many do.

OK, thanks, Arthur. So Jerry is dodgy is he? Jerry, try putting your name as a signature and your name always appears then! (My name appears at the bottom as my signature in my profile)
