I can't get on with jazz violin; just doesn't work for me I'm afraid. Like your other choices however. You know ... not always keen on jazz sax either? Particularly the soprano sax. But thinking.. and having said all that.. there was a violinst in this year's BBC Young Musician finals and he played an arrangment for violin of some Gershwin. I did enjoy that - it worked. But then George Gershwin IS one of my favourite composers.

Can I add a link here (on my Gershwin theme)? it's Sinead O'Conner bravely showing her having dificulties learning the tune to 'My Man's Gone Now'. It's a tough one isn't it?

Hi Derek,
thanks for your input into my take on music it's always nice to get feedback and know that
there is interest in what you are posting.
With the theme of the thread being.......
AN ECLECTIC MIX OF MUSIC
(but, peculiar to Drymdrum's tastes)
it's more than likely that eventually I'll post some items which hit your sonic button, equally there are bound to be items which visitors to this thread are not so keen on. Shame that you have a down on soprano sax as coming up soon I have Sidney Bechet and Bob Wilber in mind.
To keep you going meanwhile here is the great violinist Jascha Heifetz playing
My Man's Gone Now

Jascha Heifetz - Bruch - Scottish Fantasy in E-flat major, Op 46 a composition for violin and orchestra by Max Bruch, is a four movement fantasy on Scottish folk melodies.

These threads are becoming a library of information! There's a great concert sitting here in this thread!!
Makes me wonder whether it's worth setting up a thread for programmes of music which could be based around a theme or style and once formed, we lock 'em up and leave there as a performance. Could become a unique feature of DIYAH.
I love Porgy and Bess, but really don't like Sinead singing it. She kind of loses it's raw emotion and the very phrase she has trouble with should sound more like a build up to a scream of desperation, where she kind of sounds lost and it doesn't build properly.
Stephan is brilliant. So fluid and natural. Great stuff.

That's kinda along the lines that I've been thinking, with the amazing amount of music now available on Youtube and other good providers like NPR and the BBC to name only a few, there's every opportunity for anyone wishing to explore and show the many facets of the subject....."MUSIC"..... which interests them. This thread could be the starter within a global thread based on your idea of a locked performance. Each forum member has the chance to draw together from the great WWW all the music which makes them TICK and post it on the forum within their own thread. Perhaps having a discussion thread within the global holding thread where members could comment on all aspects of each others musical postings would ensure that each individual members thread remained pure.

I've created this thread as the follow up to the thread created by Drumdrym where he kindly put together a concert of music and some feedback followed:

I see what you mean - I'll listen to this you-tube clip again and then listen to the finished version (I have the CD: Larry Adler's 'Glory of Gershwin'). I think, IIRC, the finished version is pretty good. Moving lyrics anyway. Also, somewhere, I have Nina Simone singing 'I Loves You Porgy' - I have cried when I've listened to this. It's serious stuff. It hurts to listen. Derek

I've played the piece actually and that particular song is a really big high point of the opera. It's like an elongated moan that kind of builds to a scream once she realises she's lost Porgy. It's really quite heart wrenching.
There's another opera that I find difficult. The ending of Madame Butterfly, which also ends with a orchestral scream after she's killed herself. Very powerful stuff. Puccini is one of my favourites. Of course, there's also poor Mimi from La Boheme. The point where Rodolpho thinks she's asleep and draws the curtains, but she's died. He realises moments later and let's out a scream that I really can't play. I have to mime. Even thinking of it gets to me.
Actually, Israel is the ex flute player from Gershwin's band. He's not well at the moment, bless him, but he knows Gershwin inside out.

It's just on a year since he posted I think. I really enjoyed your discussions back then. I didn't understand much of it, but the passion came through and I have some really nice CDs and a box set because of the chat. Syd

Israel has had a tough year and has been having chemo. He's been taking headphones in with him and listens while he goes through a really difficult time. Hopefully he'll return when he's strong enough.
What box set have you got Syd? Porgy and Bess?

Hi Ian
No, it's the big Stravinsky set, recommended by Israel. I think you also got that set, on Amazon. It was the time I recorded the BBC concert as well.
It will be great to see Israel back, he's had a tough time.

I nearly pushed the button on the 3CD Houston Opera set, then thought I would like to hear your thoughts. Syd

I have quite an oldish recording Syd. It's an EMI Version, but because it's ripped, I don't exactly know. It's not really old but very good. The cover is bluish with Bess' face looking right and down. Porgy half face in background. Title in gold. I also have an EMI DVD of the opera by EMI featuring Willard White which is also excellent.
When you hear it done well, it's a real hair raiser.
