Is this really a DAC? I can't see any anologue outputs, it looks like it actually is a D2D format converter (USB -> SPDIF, Toslink, AES/EBU, HDMI).

no it certainly is not a dac. only just noticed that on the ebay advert. it could be misleading to some i guess.

It's a USB converter only that can drive DAC's via optical, coax, I2S or AES inputs.
It can thus be used on DAC's lacking a (good) USB input.
Gustard is a nice brand with decent priced gear.

Gustard is a nice brand with decent priced gear. thanks Frans if you respect the brand then i may give it ago once xmas is paid for. i have noticed some odd sounds lately during quiet sections of songs. the most obvious is a continuous regular ticking sound. i suspect this may be caused by one of my pc fans. i am currently using a Beresford Asych-1 usb spdif converter and am not sure if it is isolated correctly. i do not remember hearing this ticking when i used my old hiface2 (but i did have worse issues with that). later next year (hopefully if my child maintenance payments finally end!!) i plan on getting something like the Marantz sa8005 and streamlining my cluttered desk. but in the meantime i am considering this to compare to the Asynch-1. cheers

I would rate it on par with Beresford stuff.
This one too doesn't isolate electrically unless you are using the optical out. It needs (XMOS) drivers to go beyond 24/96

Simon, if you will be connecting it to your DAC through SPDIF I don't think it is going be worth it, more so if you are planning on getting the Marantz. It won't that much better than your current adapter.
