Frans uses it with one of his filters to supply deeper bass and a more open treble. He really rates it.

I have my HD800's for three years now, and there is not a single day that i am not astonished with the clarity they provide. I have Anaxilus ModII on them and waiting for the III version to come out.
I am currently using them paired with Schiit Mjolnir (balanced) and a JLSounds AKM4369 dac paired with their brilliant USB/I2S receiver and powered by two Salas Bib shunts.
The sound is very good although a bit on the edgy side with a little digital glare. I have not used the ocsilator board or the JG buffer.
The sound of the dac is acceptable if you compare the price, it compares well with a lot of comercial dac of similar or higher price.
The problem with the HD800's is that they are so good and reveiling that you need a top notch system that complements them well,in order to be able to listen to them with a wide variety of recordings without fatigue.
I have also Fostex T50rp modded, that many of you might remember, and HiFiMan HE-500 that complement my listening needs.
I find that the HE-500's are my all around headphone, but the HD800 is the headphone of choice for my best recordings.
The ability of spacial repoduction, instrument separation and clarity is if not equal to none equal to a few also expensive alternatives.
These are definately NOT just for casual listening.
On the HD650's i can say i had them, and dont have them any more. Athough i didnt have such good amplification (or source) then. There is no comparison to what true detail you hear though the on and the other.

In the end, I got neither. I'm using a Fostex th900 now. I decided that the top end of the hd800 would be a bit much for me and toyed around with the idea of an he6.
I really like the Fostex a great deal and about to add an ifi micro amp for portable use.

I dont think it is scam, consider that i bought mine for 899euro new 4 years ago.
The problems that these phones may have are (judging from mine and the natural wear due to use):
1.Small chips off the paint 2.Deteriorated cable at the connectors/and or the plug might be a little worn (gold coming of) 3.The pads and headband will definitely need washing at least (or change to new ones)
The drivers should be ok and they do not deteriorate from normal use.
In any event event the worst case scenario it is worth it if you like the sound signature of these phones.
I have changed the cable because the plastic sheathing deteriorated, and i have washed the pads/headband twice already but the fine velour is thinning out. They might need replacing in a year or so.
I love them but you have to have good gear to compliment them.

I often find my first impressions change later. So it's better really to have the headphones for a week or so.
Trouble is that for most people that's not possible with higher end headphones.
