i am a little confused by their marketing of these. audeze.com/products/el-8-collection/el-8they clearly state....... "The world’s most advanced planar magnetic headphone" yet they are less than half the price of an lcd3! i know they are aiming at the portable market , but even so, the statement is odd, imo. mind you , having said that, the closed model would go nice with my new dap!!!!! off to read the inevitable hype!!

I doubt it will beat the LCD2 + filter (that will be hard to beat.... period)
It seems to be between an LCD2 and LCDX in clarity.... a bit HD650 in signature. BUT it can be used with portables (having a high efficiency) the LCD2/3 won't do this that well.
Manufacturer statements are made to increase sales.... Every one of them claims new and superior technology. The EL-8 has drivers with a magnet on one side only (cheaper to make, less heavy but slightly higher distortion) BUT the EL-8 differs with other single sidede planars in that magnet side is towards the ear albeit with the FAZOR. Other single sided planars have the open membrane side pointed towards the ears.
It is an attempt to enter the lighter, cheaper and differently stiled portable ortho market (think Oppo PM2) and in the price range of HE400i/HE560

still fancy trying the closed el8. just got the feeling it would be much closer to the standard/sound sig of my filtered lcd2 than my d600.

The EL-8`s.. both closed and opened backed....are nice sounding headphones and indeed sound very similar to the LCD2`s in there SQ presentation,..also there light weight and comfort level is a positive improvement over the 2`s. However... i find the Hifiman HE-560`s to have an overall better SQ, similar light weight and comfort levels, albeit at a slightly higher cost(£50)but worth the extra IMO. Mick. thanks Mick, i will try and audition the closed back version in the near future. i understand they have good isolation. i would be looking to replace my d600, not the lcd2 though.

Mick, are the 560's warmer sounding than the he6? That was another one I was considering.
