I went down to Eastbourne yesterday and out on the sea, the smog was unbelievable. High pressure and no wind caused sand from the Sahara to move in the upper atmosphere and then it came down on us here. Visibilty was quite poor and at one point, with the coast just in view one single boat and a seagull was all I could see. So I quickly snapped it when the seagull got into a decent(ish) position just to show how bad it actually was out there. Quite frightening although the sea was like a mill pond because the air just wasn't moving. I took this with my phone, not a proper camera so quality isn't great. It was like being on another planet.

Reminds me of the smog in Los Angeles in summer. I just read an article in the local paper, that one of our UC's have discovered that some of the smog we get here in California comes all the way over from China. It really is a small planet we live on.

It's unusual at sea unless there's a fog. Funny thing is back on the beach, it was sunny and blue. I'll see if I can upload a picture I took before I set off.

I would like to see that, as I may never get to your part of the world. Unless they invent a Star Trek type transporter.

This is the beach just before I set off. When I came back it was the same, so it wasn't as bad on the land as it was at sea. Again, just a shot on the phone. I must start using my cameras again.

Amazing difference between the two. Looks good really considering phones were made to talk on not to long ago.

Yes. Phones are useful things for other things than just talking!! I used a Windows phone ... a Nokia Lumia. Not great resolution and no real control of colour temperature or focus but gets a shot if you don't want to carry gear I guess.
Just shows the difference between land and sea though.
Btw, the pier was set alight, I think it was last year and it really went up. Thugs did it. They've reopened now, while they rebuild what went, but I visited a little glass shop on the end of it and they were selling framed photographs of it going up. Really dramatic, but I'm not sure I'd want it on my walls.
It's the blue bit on the photo.
My new car is covered in sand now.
