Can you wear 'in ears', Gordon? No Ian, I'm afraid not. I never get them to fit properly anyway but right now my ear feels like plasticine. Anyway, perspective is important & things could be much worse. I'm going to pretend I'm abstaining while I wait for the official release of the filter. That's something to look forward to. Happy listening guys.

That's a bummer Gordon. But as you say things could be worse. I recall you taking a break from your HD650 before getting the Ember so I suppose this is somewhat similar (albeit someone else took the decision for you). Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder and all that. ---- Ian - not a lot cheaper than the £158 you saw on one of the EU stores but there is a 'like new' pair of Pros listed on the UK Warehouse Marketplace at the mo' for £147ish. The only thing I would say is that they do have an annoying tendency to stick bright yellow Warehouse stickers on the outer box which are near impossible to remove, just in case you're fussy about having pristine boxes. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00EXO8Y3Y/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1433057602&sr=8-1&keywords=focal+spirit+pro&condition=used

That's the cheapest I've seen, Mark.
It's a pity that they don't give out all three cables. They really make the headphone more useable so that cabling is out of the way in each situation. The flat one really is a python actually. It's a really good cable. It's black, not brown so is fine with the Pro. I wasn't too bothered in any case though if it turned out to be brown.
Comparing it with the HD650 shows that it is kind of similar in tonality.
I hope Focal continue with headphones. Their monitors are really good and it looks to me as though they have thought about the sound of the headphones but further work might perhaps be needed with the headbands. Unless as they say, the issue has been fixed by changing the plastic compound to be less prone to cracking. Pros won't like that in a studio headphone so it really needs to be fixed.
One way that they could fix it could be to reduce the stiffness in the top of the headband. If that flexed just a little more, then less leverage would be put onto the two side bits that people have said cracks appear in. I noticed that the top section is pretty stiff.

That's good news about the cable colour. I got mine bundled with the Classic so it was brown to match, so assumed that any spares would be the same. Sorry for the confusion! I think Focal are definitely a company to watch in the headphone market. They've got the fundamentals right but you can tell they are still finding their feet a bit with some daft choices. If they take on board owner feedback (availability of spares, headband design/ materials, ear cup size etc.) and continue to refine their drivers we could see something quite special. The Pro to me does seem to be a bit of a joke build-wise as you rightly point out, esp. when you consider the intended market where it's likely to be treated like a tool of the trade rather than a personal possession. Oddly the more home-centric Classic felt a lot more robust to me and the headband seemed solid. You would never do what Tyll is doing to the Classic 2m 10s into this clip with the Pro

Tyll's review is pretty much spot on. I didn't realise that you have the Classic. I really like the look of that one as well.
When he bent the headband out, I must admit, I held my breathe and wauted for a snap sound. He did it on the Classic though I think. I wonder whether the arrangement is different underneath the covering?
On the Pro, you can see a flat plastic plate, screwed into the headband which is the weak spot I think. Not sure if the Classic had those plates.
I guess the drivers are the same? The Classic is just a bit warmer, but that could be perhaps the cups being slightly different?
The more I listen to how 'ordinary' it sounds the better I feel it actually is, which is quite funny really!!'

'Ordinary' can be good. Surprisingly so! I bought the Pro & Classic upon release but have moved both on now. Kind of regret not keeping the Pro though so may buy one again when funds permit. As far as I know both use the same drivers so not quite sure what they did to tune them differently. Perhaps a different internal cup design (outwardly they look identical aside from finish / plastic used) or some change in damping material? The Classic headband is covered in pleather so it's hard to tell if the construction is the same. I suspect it is different and they use more metal. Certainly I couldn't feel any plates when I was comparing them and didn't notice any 'give' when I pressed at the same point the Pro's plates are situated. Perhaps Focal could apply the following tests when making the Pro 2.0

Is Brighton synonymous with "bonkers" too?

It helps to be bonkers to live there, Gordon. Boy George keeps coming out and one time we went for a wander down there, we were stopped by the ex boxer Chris Eubanks who is totally off his head. It's a mad place for sure.
