That's one thing I really like about Sennheiser is that all their higher end headphones are completely modular. Anything breaks you just replace that part.
You can even build a complete pair from scratch using only spare parts if the urge so takes you.

Yes, I have met people who have kept their HD800's going strong for years.

Actually I have 3 acoustics and two electrics. To add insult to injury I have a skin condition on my hands. The treatment thins my skin so I can't build up calluses and sometimes my fingers bleed. I used to be decent enough I could play in a garage band. Hey, as George Harrison said, all things must pass eh? What I miss most is playing along as I listen to a song. Boo hoo.

I bought my HD800 4 years ago at exactly that price from the importer here in Greece.
I am very happy with them, and i do believe that they are the top dynamic headphone still after all these years.
The sounstage is second to none, so is their analytical ability and bass extension and speed (for dynamic).
There are ways and means to calm down their metallic and tizzy treble, Frans's filter/Anax mod/use of very warm amp, any way is worth it, because no other headphone (dynamic) sounds even close to it.
Other headphones might be more pleasurable to listen to (yet less accurate for sure), i dont understand statements saying this is better than that.
Price policy in hifi is dictated by cost/marketing usually times 5-7, and a factor to be concidered is sound quality, when a product has exceptional quality the cost to price ratio might even be in the region to 10x and upward.
I have changed many headphones over the years my HD800's are going nowhere... ever...

i dont understand statements saying this is better than that. I have changed many headphones over the years my HD800's are going nowhere... ever... I don't understand that either, Chris. I get a lot of emails asking, 'is this better than that' and my first thought is what do they mean exactly by 'better'? Very often, people have no idea what kind of sound they want and sample a headphone and make a subjective decision based on that one moment/recording. Very few also seem to take too much notice of playback volume. So I never know what to say when someone asks. I'm not sure what they're looking for. Only this morning, someone emailed me from HF to ask whether the Polaris is better than the Ember. I've been asked that over and over. I don't really know what they mean. I think if someone is unsure of what they want, then they need to look at measurements more perhaps and compare two items so that they can decide for themselves what is importNt to them. For me, Timbre is the first thing that needs to be pretty accurate. Tonal things are very important to me, perhaps more than image I think. I also prefer a slightly raised bass if the bass isn't extended. If it is, then I don't mind a mid bass hump missing. There is an area in the treble that I don't particularly care for if it's raised but I'm not exactly sure where it is because I don't mind the K551 treble too much but the K550 as it sells, can verge on annoying. There's a smidgen more up there somewhere in the treble. Mids for me need to be very present if I'm honest. The th900 is a little low in the middle but Senn hd650 is lovely there. Thing is though, that I've been fortunate enough to have heard or owned a lot of headphones very cheaply so I've kind of built up a picture of what I prefer and I am aware that most wouldn't be able or want to do that. Hd800 is attractive in spite of that treble zing. If it drops any more, I might jump. Don't know really. I still like the hd650 a lot although I went off them after hearing the Kameleon and then going back. That pointed out its problem areas to me in technicolour. They're not massive but there is a mid bass colouration that is better when not there. It wasn't u til I heard the Kameleon that I noticed it and it put me off them for a little while. I really like the th900 although it also has its quirks. The bass is lovely. Maybe an hd800 next ... I still might wait for a 900 and then buy the 800 cheaper!!
