Seriously..... You're running in invisible mode so no one knows you're there!!! The X Files aren't due to start until the beginning of February ..... = us = you. Just wondered whether you are aware of it. You're a hidden ninja.

Oh. I see......
You've been invisible (except to admin) for ages!! I wondered whether you knew. I was beginning to think you were a ninja!!
Actually, I compared the Clip with X1 an hour ago. More power from X1 and slightly more 'spacey' sounding. A little more air around the sound.
X5 makes a brilliant home unit into a dac/amp.
Gordon's idea of the px100 pad mod is really very good. The px100 sounds really 'hifi like' direct from the X1. It's a warm, fruity sound with a lot of clarity and weight. Really nice.
X1 is a very good value player. Just doesn't have digital out. It's hard to differentiate the headphone out sound of the X1, 3 and 5 as well.

So I looked into the FiiO M3.
It would appear as though it basically is a Sansa Clip Sport in a FiiO enclosure. Same annoying browsing properties and song limits. Same DAC + amp etc.
Forget about the M3...wouldn't recommend the Sansa Clip sport either.
X1 is the cheapest one I would recommend. The X3-II could be a better option though.

I can hear a difference in 'air'' and depth of soumd between the Clip and X1 which did surprise me if I'm honest. More difficult to tell the X1 from X3. It seems to be more to do with features between the X series I think.
Perhaps standards in digital sound have actually improved?

I think I am going for the X3ii. I like the extra possibilities it offers over the X1.
I have given a thought to the possibility of using my Sony Z3 compact + fiio e17/e18, but things get heavy and bulky very rapidly, and as I mentioned before I suspect I have a ify unit of the Z3.

The X3 is a good combination of good sound with great output options.
It works well direct into headphones and has plenty of its own power. A very good line out for hi fi. A digital out for better dac's. Plays a wide variety of formats up to a pretty high resolution. Menu system is ok. Not brilliant but folder view gets around most of the problems. Just make sure that you set up a good hierarchy of files. 128gb memory plus 8 on the unit itself.
It's a really good player and I'm sure you'll love it.

Finally, I found a mint 2nd hand X3ii here in Sweden. Got it yesterday. I am very happy with the sound and features.
Thanks guys for all this enjoyable discussion!
