Curious thing I noticed using the Momentum 2 'on ear' today, from my Ipod Touch.
So far, I've been listening from my Fiio units which are all excellent. Crisp, warm sound. Really pleasing.
Switching to the Ipod made the bass seem a little 'muddy' and thick. Quite a difference. Possibly because the Momentum has an emphasised mid bass response, which I don't mind but the Ipod was less clear. In fact, the bass thickness reminded me very much of the dt770 pro but worse until one change .......
The cure is to use the digital out. I went into a cheapo Topping NX2 digitally via the lightening connector and the sound is instantly cleaned up. No boom and more speed in the bass attack. No longer feels sluggish and fat. In fact, it might even be going deeper as well.
Now there must be some technical reason for this, because the difference really isn't slight. Perhaps the Ipod volume out has a higher output impedance? The Momentum is very low impedance, so perhaps the Ipod struggles with it? There is an instant difference which makes using a digital amp with the Momentum very worthwhile.
The NX2 is absolutely rock bottom as far as digital amps go and yet, the sound from the Momentum really lifts a lot and actually sounds extremely impressive.
So if anyone uses Ipods, get a camera docking lead with a lightening connector and then link whatever you need to that in order to connect to an amp. The difference is pretty amazing and I think perhaps I'll be carrying the Topping around with me much more from now on.
The headphone out on Ipods could do with some kind of mod!!
