Hey All,
With the latest Android update (Lollipop), USB audio is supported. Any thoughts of using an Android phone (unlocked / off network) as a media player? I suspect I could pick up an unlocked "Lollipop-capable" android phone for ~$75. With an SD card, it seems that this might be a pretty decent solution: good UI, USB audio out, relatively inexpensive.
Thoughts?

Hi,
i´m using Neutron (Player) on Lollipop with my Xperia Z2 (not rooted) and Audioquest Dragonfly v1.2 or Chord Mojo, works like a charm. My Brother had problems with Neutron on Galaxy S5 and Schiit Fulla, but there´s a evaluation Version of Neutron, so you can try before you buy. Btw: Lollipop is USB Audio capable, but only 24bit/48kHz, and some Phones don´t support USB Audio at all, no matter if rooted or not.

I'm a Z2 owner too and USB audio works fine for me also using a USB OTG cable. Have used both a Mojo and Fiio E18 Kunlun without issues on Lollipop although like Nils mentions you are restricted to 24/48.
Some phones simply don't support USB audio full stop, others require you to use an app like USBAPP (USB Audio Player Pro) for it to work and some natively support it with all apps e.g. Z2.
I think USBAPP is unusual in that it allows you to completely bypass Android's own audio 'processing' so allows you to output audio at the bitrate your files are encoded e.g. 16/44, 24/192 etc. (assuming the phone's DAC chip supports them).

The Neutron Player comes with its own USB Driver too, just like USBAPP, and is capable of at least 32/384 with my Phone and the Mojo, 24/196 with the Dragonfly. I didn´t check this with the built-in DAC.

Schiit Fulla requires more power so your brother might have better luck with a powered USB hub, but that defeats the purpose of a portable DAC/amp. I can use my Nexus 6P with HRT dSp DAC (all music players/system wide) but it's too noisy for my DN2000J earphones. Also, sometimes it bugs out and audio stops coming through.
