due to the recent failure of my only dac (micro idsd) i am looking for a cheap back-up in case of future issues. i have considered adding the following to my v200 headphone amp, this will cost around £160. this board uses pcm1798 chip, dont know whether its a good one or not? would this board provide appropriate isolation? lake-people.de/produktdetails/USB_24-192.htmla downside of this option is obviously, if i sell the v200! the upside, is it slips nicely into an already existing box and under the other half's radar! so any suggestions for an alternative? preferably somewhere with next day delivery, as i am already tired of cd swapping. cheers guys

You don't want to use a dap as a source? Line out straight into an amp or digital out.
X3 or X5 are excellent. Digital out from them is great and line out as well. The can double as a dac.
Just thinking that you can get away from the computer and it's portavle as well for £170 in the case of X3.
I'm away this week and have 256gb of music loaded onto my x5. Superb sound too.

What about an IFI nano iDSD? I am using one in the office with my Ember. The amp part is clearly inferior (far less power) to its bigger brother (the micro iDSD). But the dac part to my ears is quite good. If you have that kind of budget, this one is actually hard to beat.
Good luck with the search!

I wonder how similar the dac section is? Maybe a nano would be a permanent solution as I don't need the amp section I have that covered with 2 good desktop amps. I also don't need battery pack . But I would need an ipurifier. Will look later.

If I remember correctly both dacs have the same chip for the DA conversion. The micro may arguably have slightly better electronics around it, but the effect of those using an external amp was not obvious to me when I tested them at the shop. You will loose the xbass switch and 3D sound though.
But at that price it is very hard to beat, it is a nice portable device for trips too.
The Modi 2 is maybe cheaper?
