I have tried many different tubes with the Ember, about 25 or 30 and I think that the 6sn7 is by far the best I have tried so far. The sound stage is huge, it is almost 3d like, not as directional, and the first tube, I tried was used, made in the 1940's, paid $6 including shipping, from Ebay, just to have something to try and it sounded great. Bought another tube, a VT231 from about 1948, and paid about $20, and has much more life left in it. The specs were better, and it is just that much better sounding. In my opinion, it was well worth the investment in the adapter, which by the way, is an excellent product, workmanship and materials you won't find on the net some where else. The tubes are relatively inexpensive and widely available as they were used in TVs for years. At sometime, I will go back to the 12at7's to compare, but for the immediate future, I am sticking with the 6Sn7's. As far as the glow is concerned, the older tube has less glow than the one from the late 40's I would think that the age has something to do with it as well. This link is not where I purchased the tubes, I have included it as a description for the different types. Informative......http://www.audiotubes.com/6sn7.htm. How does the 6sn& compare to the stock Ember valve I'm using right now? Bigger soundstage is good but is it better in any other way? I'm currently comparing the Ember (stock tube?) with the Polaris and I think the Ember is safe

the 6SN7 to me, YMMV, is a much better sounding tube than stock tube. Before I got the 6SN7, I had ordered two Amperex Bugle Boy 12 at7's and figured that was the end of it. Had tried 20 + different tubes and figured that the 12at7's and 12ax7's were my best bet. I had thought this for about 3 months or so, and decided that when these Amperex BB's became available that would be the best for me. Then Jeremy shows up with that 6SN7, and I had heard many times on the web about how good they sounded, I figured, why not try it, just to see, bought the adapter and a $4 tube just to see mind you, well, $4 6SN7 blew me away. It sounded so much better than any other tube I had used up until then, I figured I would try a few more, the difference between the 6SN7's that I have is not great, subtle actually, but discernable, and I can not tell which I like better. I am going to try the BB's again next week, but I think I will probably stay with the 6SN7's. In my opinion, they sound the best, the sound stage, the bass, the vocals open up more, I am hearing more information in the higher frequencies than I had ever heard before, on recordings that I have and am very used to. The only regret I have is that Jeremy waited until I spent all that money chasing tubes, he should have made the 6SN7 first! No problem, the chase was fun and interesting, lots more knowledge, and just makes me believe that this product is hitting way above it's price point. I just bought another adapter from Jeremy, just in case I wear this one out, that should tell you something. All the best, Don

Thanks Don. That's good enough for me. I'm hoping Jeremy sells the 6SN7 as that would save me trying to source one elsewhere. It seems there's a lot more valves available on your side of the Atlantic.
Gordon.

All the best, Don I am in the same situation...I have bought almost 20 tubes and concluded the bugle boy is best.....then i read your post and ordered the adapter and bought some 6ns7 on ebay.... i will feed back here to confirm or infirm your experience...thanks for your impression

p.s. i bought 5 bugle boy for one hundred bucks because i loved them, and few weeks after i read your post.....i ordered then the adapter.... i am already sorry for me because your opinion about the difference with the 6ns7 is not subtle but clearly in favor of the 6sn7...thus i trusted your evaluation...

if i decide to keep the 6sn7 adapter with the ember... is there a chassis who will fit the Ember with this adapter and tube?

Jeremy can make you a clear top to replace your top that has a 34mm cutout for the 6SN7 tube. I was able to enlarge the hole on my Ember to 34mm with a tapered reamer, sandpaper, and plastic polish. It's not quite as neat as what Jeremy does but saved me about $35 for a new top from Jeremy.

Gordon, had to go back and try one to the Amperex Bugle boy 12at7's. Gave it a fair try for an hour and felt I was missing something put the 6SN7 back in and feel better now, I was missing the slam of the base and the open airiness of the 6SN7. Hope I don't wear out the Ember, looking for a 100 foot extension cord so I can move around the house with it on!!

All the best, Don I confirm entirely your impression..... immediately and evidently superior to all my other tubes including the famous bugle boy... The 6ns7 are superior with the Ember....i wished i had not bought the other 20 tubes...

with the 6ns7 tube the Ember reveal his potential.....I think the ember is the better amp for the money.... think about the many reviews of the Ember written with an other tube than the 6ns7... I think tube rolling is a waste of money.....But not totally useless if you had discovered the right tube , for me its the 6ns7....

It is all Jeremy's and Frans fault for not designing it with the 6Sn7 to begin with, we should lynch them! Just kidding of course, the journey to find the best sound, for myself, was a little expensive considering all the tubes I tried, but now I don't have to constantly wonder, is this making any difference, because for me, it certainly has. You may not see as much difference as I have, maybe more, everyone is different, but for the small investment in an adapter, it is certainly worth it. Incredible product, design and execution. My hats off to both of the gentlemen. Thank you from a Bon-a-fide happy client. Don
