Following on from the bed thread is Shoutbox... This is the day I took our memory foam job to the council tip. Cut it up into big chunks and stuffed it the back of our MINI Clubman. Not an easy job doing it in one trip. The mattress cost something like £700-£800. When I cut the cover off I saw that it was simply a huge block of normal upholstery foam with a top layer of about 6" of memory foam. Think they saw us coming. By the way, with the whole back end of the car stuffed with foam the radio sounded weird.

We ordered a new mattress (from Hypnos) and they somehow charged me my deposit twice. They sorted a refund. I also paid extra to have the old mattress (see above) taken away.
When the guys came with the new mattress it was:
"Sorry mate, don't have the paperwork for taking the old one".
"But I paid extra to have it taken away!"
"Can't do it you see? Not without the paperwork."
I said "Off you go then. I'll dump it myself".
So I had to organise a refund for the collection fee. Wrote stiff letter of complaint but wasn't offered any compensation for being messed about.
Fortunately the Hypnos mattress is really good. Always feels good when coming home from a trip away.

We are up at Lake Tahoe for a wedding this weekend. Just beautiful. 22 C. The room has a Sleep Number bed. We're looking for a new matteress and thought it was a great chance to try it out for a couple of nights. I'm exhausted this morning. Woke up several times because I had to adjust the bloody thing to stop my back from aching. Might hit the couch tonight instead. Not for us. No knock on Sleep Number. I know quite a few people with bad backs who swear by them. For me, it was swear at them. I personally think the matteress business has a lot in common with the hi-end audio business. Lots of sales pitches and high prices, but not always better than a much cheaper option. So, for me, my Sleep Number is ZERO. At least the view is great.

I'm amazed that it went in there!!!!
You've made me wonder now whether memory foam might make a nice sound absorber .....
When we get rid of ours, I might cut it up to try it out.

I was thinking of my building at the bottom of my garden, Ron. Breeze block so very reflective but our bed mattress, placed strategically over the walls might help!!

Memory foam is surely a lossy substance, acoustics-wise. I kept a couple of pieces back when I dumped the mattress. But never got round to trying it as, say, a decoupler beneath speakers or whatever. Threw it away recently; I am having a purge on 'junk'.

About 15 or so years ago I had my wife sold on converting most of our two car garage into a dedicated listening room. Was going to have a speciality firm design the blueprints etc. Luckily I held off a a year, because my position was eliminated due to budget cuts without warning. Had to return to teaching. Then the stock market/house market crash hit. Dodged a bullet as they say. Stupid me never thought at the time that having a two story house with stairs gets tough as you get older. Whew. Maybe if I put some pretty acoustically transparent fabric over the foam I could get by with adding it to the living room. Yeah and the pig on the Animals album can really fly!

Grados like memory foam!
Mine have a pair of HM5 velour earpads and a strip of memory foam on the headband. Can't say 100% it'll cure all ills, but they sure are more comfortable if nothing else
