GREAT ! A lot cheaper than buying a new one. Samsung would probably have replaced the power PCB and charged you anywhere between 200 and 300 GBP most likely. Not a chance in hell Frans, I would have bought a new TV rather than pay that money out for a repair. On reflection I think it was the power mosfet with the dodgy soldering and no heat transfer paste that caused the original problem, then my own stupidity of bypassing the internal fuse that caused more problems. The wife is happy and that's what matters

Satisfaction level 100%+ Great result Chris, I'd probably have baulked at removing the heatsink. Alan

Congrats Chris! You have given me hope. Perhaps one day they will sing again.

Congrats Chris! You have given me hope. Perhaps one day they will sing again. I hope so Ron, I am always in the frame of mind that it is always worth a try as they do not work anyway so they are just trash. So even if you completely knacker them up you have not lost anything because they did not work anyway and you are never going to listen to them. But I am sure with your friends helps and Frans expert guidance they will sing to you again. Good luck with mending them.

I may give it a try. That high voltage concerns me. Yeah my bad luck was leaving the house and not telling everyone to leave the stereo alone. Did a little research. Apparently the transformers on the newer models have a reputation for failing. Just strange that all three speakers went bad right after they were messed with. Our utility here is not known for power surges at least not big enough to fry electronics. I have never heard of it happening. It's publicly owned and they really are well run. I love the Quads, but they are fussy creatures. On the other hand, I would never have the Dunlavy SC-IV/A's if this diaster hadn't happened. And I love their sound. Great imaging. Might give a go at the sub woofer first. It a least makes some sound. The high voltage is just a momentary tickle. Sure, it's a big tickle, but survivable. As I know. I used to rebuild estats...Quads/Acoustats. And have been careless and lucky a few times. And since they've been in storage for a long, sad time, not likely any charge on the panels - as long as you don't hook them up to an amp and play them loudly while disassembling them. There's a Quad speaker repair guy in Sacramento: pkant.htmlplanet.com/elstatr.htmAnd here's a good source of advise and parts: eslrepair.com/I still miss my 63s pretty bad and stacked 57s...but married with kids 'n cats means no estats. And last year I swore a vow to only listen to one tube at a time on one pair of phones at a time. So far so good.
