I'm having a hard time picking between these two headphones and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on them. I'd ask at other forums but folks at headfi and SBAF think the T90 is terrible and I don't feel the same way.
This is for office use and I really appreciate the slight bit of isolation offered by the T90, the 880 has a more open back. I also appreciate that the T90 is easier to drive as I will be using this with a portable player. However, are the sonics that much superior on the DT880? What about a modded T90? I assume the T90 has a more recessed midrange the the 880 and a more aggressive treble with similar bass extension. Is there are difference in the pads that causes the differences in sonics or isolation? The 880 uses the classic Beyer velours and the T90 uses the microfiber pads, any thoughts?

The DT880 and T90 aren't that far apart. DT880 is a lot cheaper, the T90 is more or less what the DT1990 is now.
There is a passive filter for the T90 which removes the treble peak.
Have no idea about the pads. AFAIK the T90 is 250 Ohm so will need some voltage to drive it.

Very interesting! I have a DT1990 incoming as well, I'll be exited to compare... I might pick up a DT880 as well. Thanks Frans!

I absolutely LOVE my T-90 for cleaning up older recordings from the 20th century, as it really shows EVERYTHING.
But having a passive filter is really nice to tame the overly exposing treble in a way that is easily swappable back and forth.
Not quite as easy but still relatively quick and convenient, would be testing out the T-90 with the TYGR/Amiron fleece disc with the raised center, as well as the DT900X disc with the raised center, and the bias notches flanking the raised center.
And to see how those two discs tamed treble compared to the passive filter and to stock T-90

Alas I do not have a T90 nor the DT900ProX nor an Amiron wireless (Amiron home doesn't have the fleece disc)
The disc also affects the highest frequencies and still leaves an audible peak. It does lower the infamous treble peak though but does not get rid of it. It is a band-aid at best with some side effects.
The filter only lowers the treble peak and in the correct amount. Indeed the good part is... you can simply take it out. The same goes for using parametric EQ but that requires processing abilities which is not that easy with analog sources.
When I would have the discs (DT900X and Amiron wireless) I could check the results on my DT1990. Someone living in Germany could send me the discs. Beyer charges way too much shipping costs outside of Germany to my liking.
