I'm starting finally to clear out a few items, here's the start. They'll be offered elsewhere too. These 'phones have been owned from new by me but they have been affected by the Senn curse - cracking paint on the headband. It's well documented on the Net but Senn do nothing about, it always happens out of guarantee as far as I can see. It's purely cosmetic but many will not like it, others have the chance to buy cheap I've been watching Ebay and unaffected 650s fetch £200 plus P&P so £100 plus P&P at cost seems fair. The 'phones really are otherwise fine. The foam 'baffles' have been removed but I may still have them, they're just an oval of thin foam. Syd

Same happened to mine, Syd. Pretty poor considering the price of an HD650 new. Sound is absolutely fine though. I was wondering about a respray job on mine - rough it up a bit and just spray.
T50 taken over?

T50 taken over? It was your remark a while back about yours going like this that made me realise that it wasn't just mine Ian. I have a number of 'phones to sell, I'm finally happy with just two pairs - the T50s modified and measured by Frans, they're complete with a Frans filter. Lovely sound, ideal for everything in my CD collection that HE-6s are too 'hard' on. They also have a Frans filter, similar to Mick's, who got me interested in them! I reckon if the Senns were rubbed down with very fine wet or dry at the sides it might stop them getting any worse, or some are saying that other makes of headband covers do a nice 'cover-up' on them. If I didn't have the two pairs above they wouldn't be going, they'd get a cover. Cost around £300 new now! Syd

Sad thing is the HD650 is a very good headphone in spite of all the criticisms seen on the internet about it. T50 is very even handed; especially once Frans has 'flattened' it. I use the t40 the most and the t50 with just pads. The t50 gives a bigger bass than the modded t40 so it's handy for some things plus the fact that you can also whack the filter off if you don't want such an extended sound. So with the two headphones, I have a choice of 4 types of sound.
t40 without filter limits the top and a slight mid bass hump. t40 with filter extends the treble and flattens that hum so it's really flat. t50 gives a fat warm sound without filter. t50 gives a bigger mid bass hum with more extension with the filter on.
Don't really need much else myself either!!
You have me wondering now .... what covers the Senn headband? Not the Beyer one surely?

Thanks Syd. Shows what a bad memory I have. I even replied on that thread at the bottom of page 1!!! I just tried it and it does work. Tight fit but once the cover is on, the Senns are actually more comfortable tbh as well. Makes them look a lot better. I tend to use the HD600 more than the 650. It has just a fraction less weight and so allows the top through with a little more openness, although I suspect that the HD650 is a better headphone technically. When I compare, I feel that the HD650's top end is a little more refined with a bass lift, whereas the HD600 is a little rougher sounding in the treble without an obvious bass hump. The ideal for me would be a combination of them both. In any case, that's a really good buy for anyone wanting a cheap HD650. If anyone is interested but the cracking paint puts them off, I can tell you that they all do it eventually. Both my HD600 and 650 have cracking paint, but the Beyer band (which is very cheap) covers it all up nicely and you have an even more comfortable headphone. Even the pads for the 600 and 650 are very expensive and you'd be paying a third of that price just for them!! £38 per pair from Thomann. The other minor thing I've done is to do what you did, Syd but replace those foam discs with a bit of nylon stretched behind the pads to protect the drivers from dust. I just looked up their FR; interesting: HD650 HD600 Both exceedingly good but I can see why the treble seems more refined in the HD650 from the graph.

My HD650 are very early ones and the paint is still fine. Maybe they cut some corners in later production stages... Also did the nylon stocking mod and it sounds a tad brighter BUT when measuring them found they had a negative side affect as well. The ringing is very narrow and may not be that audible though. This is with the original foam: To view all of the measurements and comments scroll down 2/3 on this web page

I put nylons onto my HD650 but not the HD600. I can see why now, from the graphs!
The dip at 5.5KHz with and without felt could possibly be filtered out? It seems clearer defined on your graph, Frans. Not so clear on the GE graphs and looks a bit wider on their graphs. I think it's the roll off that I detect which is less on the HD600, which I use quite a lot.
Maybe we should compare some models' line ups Frans. ie HD555, 558, 598, 600 and 650. It's this very route that many would look at when working out which is the best VFM/performance ratio. For me, the sweet spot is the HD600 but I would like to hear the new HD598.
Maybe also the AT line is another area, since they have a family resemblance.
Anyway, not to get away from Syd - £100 is a great price for the HD650 and the blemishes can be easily covered by the Beyer band. I've done it to mine now and actually, it's more comfortable on the top of your head as well. The pads themselves cost £38 plus and let's face it, the HD650 is a really good headphone that does a lot well in FR, distortion and lack of ringing.

the dip is around 9kHz (the plot is somewhat tilted so use the scale in the back of the plot to see the frequency.
Excellent headphone though not the best in my armoury, but as said GBP100 is a steal.
