Syd sent me a C.H.AMP. He sent it yesterday and it arrived this morning, beautifully packed (and built). He'd even put padding over the volume pot to protect it!!
Got it configured Syd. Work really well. Thank you for such a good deal.

So what have you got planned for the CHAmp. Ian? It's not as high powered as the Ember so it'll be used with low impedance headphones from the digital radio in another room. The configuring is handy since I'll set it up to get the most out of whatever I leave in there with it. Got an amp nearly in every room now!! Maybe the toilet next?

The acoustics might be a bit tricky in the loo. I've got rid of a couple of amps recently - a BOSSFET and MF V2; although I still have a V2. I have 2 Pandas and one is on duty with T50s (0ohms) and DT990 (120ohms). The other is a spare , I also have a T1 for use with my PC and a CHAmp that I rarely use. I have more amps than I can shake a stick at but I now find myself reading the Ember thread.

TBH, the Ember is damned good. I'm putting a switch box in so I don't need more than one amp in the front room. I'm going to feed the radio, CD player and Ipod into it because it outperforms my other amps. TBH, I could sell the V8, MFV-Can and Pinkie. Bossfet. V1, V2 and X10 (but I whipped the valves out of them for the Ember. However, don't get a good enough return on them tbh so I can't be bothered to pack and post them!!

Ian, try the CHAmp with the K601 and 100 Ohm output. It can drive them to quite high levels (at least for my preferences) and sounds amazing.

I guess I was lucky - I broke even and their sale funded my T50/filter combo. How does the Ember compare to the Panda? I really like the Panda but it drifts and gets very warm inside its un-ventilated enclosure. In fact, I've been thinking about popping the innards into a Galaxy enclosure.

Personally, I prefer the Ember, Dicky. Funnily enough, I got the Panda out today and lined it up.
I never forgot Alex telling me it was probably quite a warm amp and at the time, I didn't think too much of it.
Funny thing - comparing to the Ember, I find the Ember gets inside the sound more where the Panda is 'thicker', which is what perhaps Alex had been getting at at the time.
The Ember is warm, but in a different way that doesn't 'clog' the sound up the same way that I now feel the Panda does. It has this slight 'bloat' down in the bass by comparison which is pleasant enough - especially on some of these tinny headphones that people seem to like, but put something with proper deep bass on and it soon becomes apparent that the Panda has a fat bum!!
The Ember has real authority and good bass but it seems cleaner which is a bit strange coming from a tube amp. The Ember is really fast reacting and lets the detail through. The detail comes through on the Ember, but there is this kind of 'weight' there that can cloud the real detail imo.
So for me, it's the Ember. Listening to Vaughan Williams live from the first night of the Prom just shows how relaxing and natural the Ember is. I feel that many of my amps could go.
The Horizon is also extremely good. There is an element of fine tuning with the tubes that I really like. The Ember seems very responsive to that. Then there is the amp configuration for the headphone.
For me, it's ideal. Not too technical. Slight tweaking for headphone type. Masses of power and dynamics. Timbral tweaking with tubes.
Really, it's a beauty. I like both the Ember and the Horizon a lot if I'm honest.
The smaller footprints is nice too.
As you know, my Panda gives out a minute (Highish) hum - even with the volume off. I don't like that so I tend not to use it.
I never thought I'd think this of a tube amp, but the Ember seems more transparent!!
Don't forget though - I seem to have a natural inclination towards tube amps and I don't actually know why!! (Alex would laugh his head off at this I guess - but that's what I'm getting with direct comparisons!!!)
This thread is hilarious - it's about Syd being like Greased Lightening!!
If someone asks the same question on the Ember thread, I'll copy it there!!
I think you'll be surprised when you get to hear it Dicky.

Work really well. Thank you for such a good deal. I'm glad you're pleased with it Ian. It's too useful an amp to sit in a cupboard and the rarity and pedigree is nice. I hope to avoid veering from my current determination to reduce down to the Frans' modded T50+filter and HE-6+filter, so two h/amps and these 'phones is my intended quota, when I get around to finding some boxes for posting before I try to sell anything else out of my cupboard! Thanks Syd. It works really well. Quite different from a tube - more like a grapefruit than a melon!! Managed the configuring in the end. It was the spares that made me wonder what was what.
I couldn't believe how fast it arrived.
