Glad to see someone else likes the 6N2P-EV. I like this a bright sound and this tube is one of my favorites for that reason. I just received a set of HD-650 and I'm deciding how to brighten them up a bit. I expect the 6N2P-EV and equalizer are my first options. I will also spend some time with the GE 6DJ8 smoked glass. I really like the sound from this tube, it's right up there with my ECC81 and ECC82, both 1965 Mullards

Anybody tried E80CC TUNGSRAM ? Sound is more fluid and detailed than the best Siemens or Telzfunken with a great "in the face soundstage", very balanced sound, slightly bassy. It's one of the best tube you can find at this time for the Ember, it's clearly a level above any other "standards" tubes like 12AU7, 12AT7, 6DJ8, etc.. try it you won't regret it ! I purchased a couple of these from Jeremy. I listen to them on a regular basis but they just don't do it for me. I love their appearance, they are just so darn tall. I have two so if anyone want to buy one shoot me a PM. Since I made this post a number of things have changed in my audio listening and one of them is my evaluation (in the Sunrise II)of the Tungsram E80CC. I don't normally get concerned about burning in tubes, but I'm afraid that in the case of this Tungsram it really benefits from some use. I use quite a few different headphones so I can't give a detailed comparison to other tubes but right now, using the HD650 in particular, I really like this tube and won't disagree with much of the glowing reviews I have read.

Just a note about Russian tubes that I picked up from a Little Dot thread on Head Fi:
Letters at the end means: i - impulse circuit
E - long life V - high reliability
D - extra long life R - extra high reliability Ru / En H = N П,n = P

Thanks Frans,
These are fairly cost effective, always looking for the bargain........
I have over 400 hours of listening on my Ember most of which is on a 12AU7 tube, I am going slow on swapping tubes, I need time to to go through a lot of different music before trying a different tube. Just last week I swapped in a 6922 China tube. It sounds different, but I won't add to confusion with my opinion of the sound, I just don't have the experience to think I can rate tubes. I do notice the differences and I do like the 6922. Mainly, I am really liking the Project Ember. Thanks for all the information and great products you have had your hand in.
That said, headphone listening is a great hobby and having an amp and DAC make a big difference. The Ember is a welcome addition for me.

This might be helpful to some folks....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vacuum_tubes........
I purchased one of these.......http://www.tubemonger.com/NOVIB_Socket_Saver_with_Vibration_Red_B9A_NOVAL_p/novib.htm.............it sure makes it easier to change the tubes with the socket above the top to the case.

Have been using the 6H6N from the Reflector factory and am really liking it. Similar to the 12bh7, but to me at least, a little better execution of bass line and treble seems clearer. Have a 7DJ8 on the way in, have to compare that to the 6DJ8's.

1955 MULLARD ECC82 12AU7 LONG PLATE SQUARE GETTER
I know I spend to much money from an audio perspective, but I wanted a tube from the Mullard Blackburn factory and that's the best one I could find. Tested as NOS. But I also bought it from a collectors perspective and to get one of the "famous" old tubes
Unfortunately wont be able to test it in my Project Sunrise III right now (It had to send it back to Jeremy for some repair). So I am all excited right now to get my amp back and pop the Mullard in

My favorite tube so far is my 1965 Amperex Holland treble clef logo Bugle Boy 12AX7. This tube is pretty sensitive to RF etc. But boy or boy does it have a nice sound. Very detailed, high gain, forward vocals, timbre is fantastic and very good separation of instruments. This tube is very rich sounding. Love it. I have 9 other tubes. Some great some not so much. I have three tubes I have not listened to yet.

I am no audiophile. I'm just a guy that loves good sounding music. I'll do my best to describe my tubes.
Well I've had a week with some tubes, a few days with others and tonight for several more. Instead of talking about the brands I can add some input on the tube types I like the most. Keep in mind that I have not spent hours on end with all of these tubes except for the '64 Amperex 12ax7 (which sounds amazing)
So I tend to gravitate towards the 12ax7's the most. (I own several Amperex tubes in this category; all Bugle Boys except one Polytronics Lab branded Amperex and the Tungsol 12ax7).
All of them have REALLY up front vocals, a ton of mid range punch with strong highs. Bass is good but doesn't stand out as much; but seems accurate which I prefer when listening to music. Great separation, (instruments). Due to the big gain on these tubes they can seem a little on the bright side. Not the tube I'd use with my Grado but work well with my LCD-2.
The Tungsol 12ax7 is the worst of the bunch. This is a replica Russian tube based off the vintage tubes and it just kinda blows. It's okay but not a tube that I'll use again. Compared to the vintage Amperex tubes it doesn't even compete.
Next we have the 12au7's. (JJ and Westinghouse with Westinghouse clearly winning.) These have a more mellow smooth sound to them. I guess a bit on the warmer side. the entire FR seems to be more neutral. Vocals are back with the rest of the band. I think these are good, not great and work well with my Grado though for the LCD-2 I prefer the 12ax7 or 12at7 or just about anything else I have. The JJ 12au7 is prettty good. Sounds kinda like my SS amp and is a little grainy. It's a decent tube but I'll not be using it again.
Next we have the 12at7 (Telefunken) Man where do I start? This one sounds amazing and I think this is the nicest sounding tube I own. Higher gain than the 12au7 but not as high as the 12ax7. Amazing separation, great clarity, not quite neutral but close, vocals are slightly forward, mids are very clean, If any tube was 3d it is this one. Bass has punch very much like the 12ax7; not super deep or anything but clean and realistic sounding to me. All in all this tube sounds beautiful. I like it a lot!!
Next we have the 6dj8 tubes. (I own two of these. A vintage Amperex bugle boy gold pin and a vintage Siemens (Zenith branded)) These believe it or not both sound different from one another. The bugle boy sounds a lot like the other Amperex 12ax7's but without the gain. So everything I said about the Amperex 12ax7's fits in with this tube but the gain is much lower. The Siemens is what is in my amp right now. Not as clean as the others and vocals are more 'back with the band' everything seems pushed back slightly in sound but good separation, pretty neutral sounding compared to the Amperex 6dj8 but good sounding and even though it's not quite as clean; it's still clean enough to sit back and enjoy. The Amperex really kicks it up a notch though.
So that's it. My take so far. I expect all of these tubes to get better with use and I have yet to run my amp in conjunction with my Oritek Audio OMZ dac V4.1 as I am waiting for my blue jeans cable to come in. So I'm using my Harman Kardon 3490 as a preamp. I expect once the Oritek is hooked up to the amp I will get even better sound out of each of these tubes. I might then
re-evaluate each of these tubes and update this.
Let me rank my tubes in the order of best to worst sounding (to my ears):
1960 Telefunken 12AT7 1964 Amperex Holland treble clef logo Bugle Boy 12ax7 1961 AMPEREX BUGLE BOY 12AX7 Polytronics Lab 12ax7 (Amperex Holland) Amperex Bugle Boy Holland 6DJ8 ECC88 Large D Getter GOLD PIN 1968 SIEMENS ECC88 6DJ8 Westinghouse black plate 12au7 Westinghouse black plate 12au7 JJ 12au7 Tungsol 12ax7

I can't express enough how is you haven't heard a Telefunken in your Ember you should do so at your earliest convenience. My 12AT7 is by far the best sounding tube I have heard to date. This tube just puts the biggest damn smile on my face.
