Hello, I am a new owner of Project Ember. I am using Mullard CV4024 / 12AT7 tube so far and It sounds great. Does 6J1P-EV tubes work with Ember?

Hello, I am a new owner of Project Ember. Does 6J1P-EV tubes work with Ember? Welcome to the forum ! The 6J1P-EV is a single pentode and has 3 'control grids' where triodes (as used in Ember) have only 1 grid. It is a small tube with a 7 pin base. A Pentode has more linear transfer characteristic than a triode. It's the 'imperfect' non linear behaviour of the tube that I am after and this, more or less, lacks in pentodes The Ember 'only' takes dual-triodes (2 triodes in one glass bottle) with a noval-type (9 pin) socket. There are LOTS of dual-triodes to choose from. A triode has only 1 grid and has specific non-linearities that 'change' the original input signal (audio) and add some 'distortion'. This 'distortion' doesn't sound like most think distortion sounds like but the specific 'distortion' of the tube 'adds' to the sonic experience instead of degrading the sound quality. This is why the Ember is a non-feedback triode design. If it were to use feature overall feedback (would be easy to design) then the 'added' harmonics would be lowered and if enough feedback is used would be completely gone (well below audible levels, not totally gone)

Hello Solderdude, Thanks for the reply. your comment is like latin or greek to me . I think i cannot use 6J1P-EV tubes with Ember. If you have any recommendation for tubes please let me know.

I would suggest staying with the supplied tube for a little while so that you have some kind of reference point. There's not really a great deal to be had by going through tubes if you don't really know what you are looking for, if you see what I mean.
I was amazed to see a guy on HF who had bought an HD650 and instantly asked about upgrading its cable, without really 'learning' the sound of the 650 before embarking on a very expensive journey.
Listen to the one supplied and see if you can hear anything that needs improvement. At least then, you have a clearer idea of what you want.
Welcome to DIYAH. You are correct, you can't use those tubes!!
Solderdude is explaining that the Ember is designed to really capture a 'tube' sound and have a real 'harmonic' flavour added to the sound by having no feedback in order to retain as much of the harmonics of tubes as possible.

Thanks Rabbit for the translation My HE-560 sounds great with Ember/Mullard CV4024. I also have Little Dot MK III amp. I just wanted to know whether i can use those tubes with Ember.

If you want a nice upgrade to the Mullard CV4024 try the Telefunken 12at7's, I listened to the Mullard CV4024 for several months and really enjoyed it, but the nagging thought about a Telefunken took hold and I think I have found the match I wanted, I use the Ember with a Emotiva xda2 Oppo dv971h and Sennheiser HD650's. I also run off my pc either co-ax or usb depending. This Ember justs gets better all the time. Welcome aboard.

I will second the Telefunken 12at7's. I bought a couple back in the 90's for a VTL amp and they sound the best so far. They are date coded March 1962.
I have a question for solderdude - Will a 6350 dual triode work in the Ember?

Not directly BUT if you have a socket saver and rewire that thing it can be used. The Gates and Cathodes have been swapped. 6350 triode pinning: Ember socket pinning: The pictures come from the Radio Museum which is a great resource for tube data.

Thanks solderdude. I first checked on nostalgiaair and it showed them wired the same as a 12ax7 but I saw the gates and cathodes swapped on another site. Do I just need to swap 2,3 and 7,8?
BTW, great amp. I have had a Lyr for 1 year so I have a lot of tubes to rock and roll with. The ember makes my HD600s sing.

I also wondered about improper flashing, if that would have an effect on tube performance.

The base will probably last longer than the tube itself

I also wondered about improper flashing, if that would have an effect on tube performance. I think as long as the flash spot is metalic looking instead off white the tube will be O.K. Perhaps looking on the web brings some clues.
