I do check the web for information but when you don't know the sources credentials it is still a crap shoot. Coming from you, I can trust what you say. I am sorry if I bothered you..

I've been scouring the net for 6SN7 tubes to be used when I finally get around to buying an Ember of my own. I found this one at a site originally recommended by Ian (Rabbit)... Philips JanCan anyone comment on whether this valve is likely to sound good & if it's good value? Regards, Gordon. Edit - I'm an idiot.

The link 'Philips Jan' links to your own post instead of the tube in question....

The Jan Philips are a nice valve Gordon. Good middle of the road and normally not too pricey. The link isn't right and I can't for the life of me remember the site that I recommended.
I find them even handed with no big fat bass sounds or squeaking treble. They are just a nice middle of the road thing with pretty low noise.

I fixed the link guys. I've been writing pretty solid for most of the last 36hrs & I'm beginning to make mistakes. Anyway, yeah, Watford Tubes is the site or something like that. It's pretty expensive though but I can't find anything else in the UK. It might come down to eBay and Chinese imports.
Im pretty pissed off to be honest. I wrote a post on HF today comparing the Ember to the O2 and was immediately attacked by some moron as if I worked for Garage 1217. I hate people who do that myself so to be accused of it makes my blood boil. I'm just not like that. In fact if any of you asked me to write something like that I'd refuse point blank.
Grrr!

I don't want to sound funny, but be careful of Chinese and Ebay stuff. Like how many hours are on them or is the full truth being told about how new they are? I've been conned by poor sellers.
Funny, I thought they were a cheapish tube.
Hang on, my Jan Philips don't look like those. Mine are green.
oh .... Mine are Jan Philips 6922 and go at £10

Sorry, can't link the picture.
You could try Mullard E88cc
Or
6n 23p eb.
Those are good as well.
I wouldn't spend too much on a valve myself.
The Mullards are good. Around £30?

Mallard, lol. Mullard, obviously. Android hates me & it's becoming mutual.

I'm taking my time going through this thread and I've got to say it's very confusing with all the similar codes used by different manufacturers, but it's an interesting read. Some of the early posts in particular are a great example of how to wind people up I must make sure I don't do the same. My ears aren't even brass these days, never mind golden so anything I say should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Hi folks,
I'm looking at valves all the time these past few days & some of the terminology is flying right over my head. Can anyone tell me what a "getter" is? I'm looking at a valve on Ebay that's described as having a D Getter. What's that all about?
Gordon.

A getter is a ring inside the tube. It has stuff on it that reacts with air when heated. It 'gets' the remaining air molecules out of a tube.
When A tube is vacuumed (not vacuum cleaned !) during production there are still some air molecules left.
Once the tip is sealed it is inserted in a sort of transformer coil. The magenitic field is activated and the getter ring heats up. The remaining air molecules bond with the hot material on the getter ring. This process is short and the stuff in the getter ring is 'flashed' and leaves the typical metal/black/silver stuff on the glass.
After this process the getter does nothing any more.
The form, size and shape as well as the position of the getter doesn't matter at all. BUT the shape, construction etc does say something about the factory and time period it is made in.
That's why it is mentioned. It is of NO influence of sonic properties by itself though.

Thanks Frank. That's interesting stuff actually. Is there some list somewhere that would allow me to work out the provenance of a valve from its spec?
