Truth is, I have a few of them here, but don't want to part with them, since my source has dried up if you see what I mean. If you contact Mike, he would be able to sell you one or two. He also tests them and they are real nos ones too, so he's reliable, You have a few 6N30P-DR ?

I have 7 E88CC / 6DJ8 Amperex branded tubes - NOS and tested on the way from the USA actually. They've also been tested. The one I like is the orange globe one. `it actually has an orange world stamped on it and for some reason, it just seems to have a little more clarity than some others. The Russian ones have a punchy bass .... all depending on your gear too though.
TBH Simon, watch that you don't get into a valve chase, where you going round and round, chasing your own tail. You can end up spending a fortune so I tend not to buy anything too expensive. Too little change for so much money.
I'm just ensuring that I have a new valve when my globe goes legs up. Valves and me are a long, slightly touchy story following all kinds of things blowing up and the final blow, when I managed to turn a valve amp on and the valve died. The replacement was ridiculous but luckily, I had the amp on test and the supplier fitted a new one and just laughed it off. (The system was also mad at over £24,000) so I have an inbuilt mistrust of tubes underneath it all.
As long as I have a working tube and a spare available for my Ember, I'm happy!!

No, sorry .... the 6n23eb or is it 6h23eb? I get very confused with all these blasted letters and numbers!! TBH, I don't get too hung up about tubes. I just use what I have and use the best of the bunch. I have a collection of about 30 to 40 here and just pull them out and listen!!
Even Jan Philips are nice to listen to. I do wonder if the price of these tubes sets of the old expectation bias if I'm honest.
They do sound slightly different and the effect is possibly greater on the Ember than on the X-Cans, but it doesn't make me want to spend a load. I'd rather change the headphone.

Jan Philips 6922 are nice middle of the road tube and can be had for low money Simon. Always liked them in the X-Cans.
I may also try to get one of the ones that Jeremy likes as well just out of curiosity, but if the cost starts creeping, I start to think about a new headphone instead!!

I know what you mean about identifying Russian tubes. I had to put all of mine in white tube boxes that I labeled with the English letters.
I'd like to try a 6N30P-DR but they generally run over $100 (saving my money for a high current Ember) and I'm not ready to spend that on a Russian tube at this point.....Also, I believe the sound is very similar to the 6N6P, and Sovtek (I think) makes one for around $30 that is reportedly just about the same.

Yes, I'd be cautious about these high priced tubes. I am tight about them myself since imho, the differences aren't worth the money. Better to save the money and get another flavour of headphone. Much bigger difference!!
As long as yo have a robust tube, if you want more bass, change the headphone!! Since using the X-Cans modified and all, I have reosrted more and more to different headphones so that there is less worry about the tube.
Values don't seem to reflect the sound but moreso the rarity. So the potential to be ripped off is quite high as they regularly do, with the abbreviation NOS. How do you know whether the tube is a pull or not?

I have been thinking that it would work on the Ember but I believe I am wrong.
I just checked a spec sheet for the 6N30p-DR and it indicates 825mA. I'm pretty sure that's higher than the Ember rating that I think is around 625mA. Is that right??

That sounds right. Franz posted that Jeremy is working on the Ember mod to increase anode current. I plan to buy one as soon as that's ready. Also, is there a thread somewhere that I can learn how to build a Fostex T50RP correction filter? And, last but not least, any idea if your StageDac is significantly better than the original Musical Fidelity V-DAC with Pyramid power supply?

oldson, thanks for the info I'll look around some more for the filter building info There are a couple of stagedac out there for a bit over $300 so I have been considering it. I am also considering the Peachtree Dac-It but I suppose I'm in no rush. What I have sounds so good.
