The best I have tried with ember is NOS RCA Black Plates 12AT7 Are they rather "mid-centric" (emphasis on the mids) like Raytheon black plates?

I have tried Raytheon 12AU7 Black plates and no it isn't as mid centric. It is neutral but very detailed and articulate.
I have tried: 6922 Siemens 6DJ8 Mullard Siemens 12AU7 Lorenz 12AU7 Mullard 12AU7 Telefunken 12AU7 And lots more which aren't in the same league as the above.
All the above are very very good and the differences are minor. However, something like sylvania or Raytheon is very mid centric but not in the same league as the above.

They're not the 'globe' One that I have Simon. In any case, they're too expensive. I think they are similar to what I have coming.
The globe one is all rubbed away too which is why I have trouble with the numbers. Someone wrote the number in one of the threads. I'll have a look. The labels do rub off easily but as I said, they could easily be 'pulls' and you have no proof.

Yes, Simon. They are on their way now. I'm stashing them away ready for the time the ones I have pop. I have 24 assorted spares plus another bought yesterday and those 7 from the USA.
TBH, I don't get too hung up about tubes. Far bigger changes with a headphone or a change of source. So I have 32 spares which could see me out if I blow one a year!!

just tried the 2nd of my old jan 6922 and it seems fine. only another 27 to get . The Jan Philips are a nice tube. I have a few of them in mint condition. They 'sound' nice and clean and were one of my preferred tubes on the x-cans. The eb's are a little more weighty, I seem to remember. I'm not sure, but Jeremy does a mixed bag of tubes but sending them off to UK may be a bit expensive. You can easily end up going around in circles with tube rolling and in the end, not being able to make your mind up. I did for some time with my three MF amps. On those it's not as easy since you have to keep opening them up, but on the Ember, it's literally seconds. That makes it very tempting to whack anything in. Be careful though, the more you pay ...... the better you think it sounds!! After all, you pay out that money and WANT to hear a difference so you listen more intently as a result. Funny enough, the same goes for reviews. For some, they need to prove how good they are at reviewing, so they hear all kinds of things: especially people new to reviewing. I kind of get a bit reticent to recommend tubes since it's easy to get carried away and some people forget that they could be forking out £50 or more for a tube which like half a respectable portable amp!! So no wonder people want to hear big differences tbh.
