This is SUCH a good headphone. Looking at it, it looks cheap and plasticky. However, put them on and you get a really pleasant surprise.
Lots of noise about the K550, but the HD250 is way more relaxed with a rock solid low bass. It's a lot nicer to my ears, and Sennheiser made a big mistake by stopping production imo. These are better, I think, than the k550 and really comfortable/light on your head.
I gave Mike a pair way back and then a pair I had got completely knackered. He then sent me a headphone back and its the one closed that I don't mind at all. Lovely with the Ember set at 100 ohms.
Pity that Senn doesn't start them up again. Now quite rare and difficult to get hold of.

I use these at work, and coming from T50s at home, they feel a little muddy and closed (and of course, they are ) I have 2 pairs - one with chrome bands on the cups and the other with grey bands. I don't suppose anyone knows what that signifies? I think the chrome banded version is older - but I'm just guessing.

Mine have grey bands and it was sent to me by Mike in bits. Everything looked new and I literally assembled the headphone, so I guess that the cups were some of the last out.
The depth of the bass is terrific really.
Funny you mentioned the t50. I plugged the Senns into my amp forgetting that I'd left the active filter on. Then I wondered why the HD250 sounded so harsh!! One I switched the filter off, it sounded positively mellow.
From what I've read and heard, they can be pretty variable but the one I have sounds great.

That 'closed' sound they had started to irritate me after a few years and sold them in favour of the HD650. The midrange is a bit on the 'thin' side of things. Bass was impressive though appeared a bit 'unreal' at the same time, difficult to explain. The HD650 and HD250-II sound completely different and eventually stopped using the HD250-II, so sold it to a colleague. A few months ago he told me the pads (pleather) had completely disintegrated. I did like 'em though and for a closed headphone sound quite good. The German version has chrome rings, the Irish version has grey plastic rings. In the German version one side of the headphone adjuster says “Made in Germany” while the opposite side says “Made in Ireland”, In the Irish version it says "Made in Ireland” on both sides. There also seems to have been a few different drivers around (impedance as well as materials). I had the grey version.

By 'adjuster' Frans, do you mean the two click mechanisms on either side that adjust and hold the head band? If so, mine have nothing written on them. Can't find Germany or Ireland on them anywhere. Unless mine is a collection of parts from the Irish factory before they stopped?
Mine was in pieces, bit all brand new and I got them just after they stopped being sold. My old ones were wrecked. Had them a long time.
This one I remember did sound different to my first. I felt that it was more 'mellow' than my first, which I found empty in the minds. This one seemed fuller. I just presumed my old ones were knackered or something.
The bass also seemed more integrated with the new one. Again, I don't know if it's because they were new at the time, but I did prefer this one in spite of it arriving as a kit, in bits!!
So I don't know it's origin and whether it was one headphone or a collection of spares from the factory.

I thought so. Mine are just blank I think. I'll check when I get up!!
AHA..... I'm blind. In cold daylight, I see it. In poor light, it disappears. Made in Ireland in my case, so that's where my spare parts came from.
I think the low bass is kind of 'detatched' and perhaps why some don't like it. Kind of like a (good) sub-woofer turned up a bit high.
I do like this headphone a lot though.
