I've been having a listen to the hd449 today whcih as a result, I think is a nice headphone.
To look at, it's a lower budget headphone, but the sound is more mid fi imo. It has a cheap looking headdband that perhaps could easily give way one day; especially on the cup connection to the headband, where it is totally plastic and with wear could possibly snap in the long run. The cups are nice and the flaps of my ears go inside so it is actually quite comfortable to wear. The pads are thin pleather (similar to the pleather of the PX200) and they are pretty firm. It would be more comfortable if these pads were softer, but it's not nasty to wear. The cable is thin and terminates in a mini jack plug so it's aimed at portables. Impedance is 32 ohms.
Sound is a surprise. It has the Senn laid back kind of sound, but a nicely balanced bass response. In fact, I like the bass which is integrated well into the rest. Mids are good. Weakest area, I'd say is the treble which could (in the Senn tradition) be a little sharper. Then again, turn them up and they really blossom. I just get the impression that the Senns are built to be played at higher volume. When you throw caution to the wind, they sound excellent and very clean.
This is no exception. It's pleasant with a very nice bass and a good sense of space within the music which I really like. In fact, the headphone sound is pretty ordinary with no glaring nasties but there is a depth to the sound image that is very good. These actually do give a sense of acoustic and space, which is very good for a closed headphone.
If you switch to something like a Panasonic HTX7, the Panasonic sounds more flashy, but after a while, going back to the Senn reveals it as a more balanced sounding headphone and perhaps less tiring in the long run for longer sessions.
It's a good 'un alright and my review one isn't going back. I'm going to keep this one.
However, tomorrow, I'm getting an HD558 to review, so I'll compare. I hear that the 558 is also very good.
I'm not certain how much these retail for, but they are very good sounding with some reservations about the build for me. If the 558 is the same sound but better built, I'd be very happy.
We'll see tomorrow!!
EDIT: looking at Golden Ears basically reveals what I am hearing with regards to the treble. It could do with t alittle lift to extend the treble further, but a nice mid section with a slight hump in the bass.
The subjective box is what I'd say is correct. Looking at the Accudio plot, it also looks good for equalization. Using Accudio makes in indeed, into a very nice headphone since it adds more extension at the top and the bass hump is ironed out.
