i have just started searching for a pair of active bookshelf speakers, for the times when i dont feel like wearing my headphones.(they dont mix well with a headache). i want to use the pre-out from my stagedac for volume control, so that rules out the units with built in dacs. i have not entirely decided on a price point but was thinking up to £500. (could go more if the retailer offers interest free credit option) dont mind 2nd hand. sound quality is important (obviously) but i know they will not compare to my headphones. any advice/recommendations from you guys would be appreciated to help me draw up a shortlist.

any advice/recommendations from you guys would be appreciated to help me draw up a shortlist. Forget the shortlist, just go out and buy any AVI speaker. They are not just the best active speakers in the world, they are the best speakers in the world - period. A firm favourite of this forum, just ask Aakshey!! Merry Christmas and thank you very much!!

Buy the avi dm5 for 700 pounds. If 500 pounds is your strict maximum then consider active monitors by adam audio.

For affordable active monitors, I was very impressed for the price with the Behringer B3030A. The truth B2030A is very cheap and was not bad at all either, in fact it was quite good - much better than the price suggested. I was able to compare them side by side to many decent low to mid priced monitors and the 20 or 30 series would be my clear choice. I would not let the behringer bashing on some forums deter you from a set, they are outstanding for the money - enough so that I own a set of the b3030a's
