I had the HI2050's after reading the reviews on that other site. Compared to my Sennheiser HD280's they have a bit better detail and more full bass response. There was just more vibration/slam in it. There was something very off about the timbre to my ears. Voices showed this especially. This must be taken with a grain of salt because the only reference I had at the time were the HD280's (which are quite flat). I ended up giving them to a coworker. I think that for what I paid for them $50 incl/shipping I would have paid a bit more for something like the ATH-M50's when they're on sale. I feel like there are better models in the Sennheiser line as well but I have zero experience with them. I tried listening to them for a number of hours to see if could get used to their sound and I just couldn't. Actually, now that I think about it, it was the presentation of the instruments that got to me. The HD280's seemed far more open and spacious, instruments were spread out more. With the HI2050's it felt much more close, like the voices were directly centered in my skull as opposed to mixing around in it. It's odd. This isn't to say that they don't sound good. I think that they do. They do certain things better than my HD280's did but I personally had issues with certain aspects. Also their headband is slightly small, I have a gigantic head and had to max out the headband extension.

Indeed most 'decent' headphones do some things well but also have drawbacks. It is the (personal) balance between the pros and cons that determine if someone keeps/likes a headphone or not. In the higher-end class there are usually more positives (that do their 'good' things 'better') than having drawbacks but few budged headphones exist that have drawbacks one could more easily live with and do their good things good enough. Owned HD280's for a while but the lack of 'air' (extension above 12kHz) is what killed it for me. I really liked the forward and clear mids and 'tight' bass. Another drawback for me (personally) is I have a small muscle just under my ear that sometimes 'pulses' by itself. With both DT770 and HD280 this was heard as a 'thumb' and annoyed me. Strangely enough the K551 doesn't have this and a closed on-ear of course also does not. When the Ember Starlight return Claus will send me Pr080 and Hi2050 (and hopefully a Somic) for measurements and 'tweaks' (possibly) and like to hear/feel/measure them myself.

That'll be interesting Frans. Could be another Superlux type headphone in the making there.
