I guess this is aimed mainly at Frans and Javier but anyone else please feel free to add anything . I have foobar set up (thanks Javier ) to play anything up to 176/24 files in seemingly most formats, which it does to my entire satisfaction. The GUI has both a horizontal peak meter bit of eye candy (which 'always' seems to show a slightly louder left channel than the right one (but that is by the by ). Below this is a multi-coloured detailed spectrum analyser. Usually activity on the peak meter is matched by activity on the spectrum analyser, which strikes me is as it should be (but what do I know ). Yesterday I played track no. 5 called Vaquero by Tiny Island on an Opus 3 DSD showcase album (which I quite liked because it is 'different' and appealed to me greatly), but, to get to the point, it was 14 seconds into the track before the spectrum analyser showed any activity and before I heard anything, (even with my hearing aids in ). Meanwhile the peak meter went into the red and off the scale initially from the first moment and stayed there until the music began at 14 seconds into the track. I repeat, nothing showed on the spectrum analyser or was audible until the 14 second point was reached - what's that all about then? Signed by 'Confused' of Sheffield .

I don't use foobar but someone here does. He may chime in.
In my experience sometimes computers do weird things.... Mostly I use a DAP as a source for countless reasons, but alas those buggers sometimes crash or show strange behaviour as well.

There are a couple explanations I can think of. As you are converting DSD to PCM there might be high level ultrasonic signals captured by the VU meter that are beyond the range of the Spectrum Analyser or maybe the are within the audio band but at the extremes and the analyser is setup by default which means a limited range that leaves out the very low and very high freqs. If you right click on the analyser you can see and change its properties.
