There has been a lot of debate about how loud we listen and how many dB's we need. Also how much power we need for those levels. I made a table with headphone power etc. but decided to write some more about it. it can be found here: diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/tutorials/power-impedance-etc/After a discussion on Changstar I decided to test how I hear and the levels that go with it (average and peak) I just set the music to play very soft, on comfortable levels, loud and very loud and measured with an SPL meter the average readings (slow ans A-weighted). I then took a 1kHz tone at -1dB (where the peaks will be) and measured that and that is the peak that can occur. The results can be found in the article.

The volume I listen at depends a great deal on the headphone that I'm using I think. Some focus better lower down than others. Also how the headphone responds at different volumes. Some seem to lose all sense of presence and low volume while others become really piercing at high volume.
I try to adjust for presence, but I also feel that dynamic range is actually better at lower volumes than high with better 'depth' info as well.
I do wonder sometimes if it would be useful to have a 'presence' control on amps in order to adjust for high or low volumes.
