Mike was on the verge of retiring until Tubular Bells was revived at the Olympics. He's just released a new album called 'Man on the Rocks'.
Tbh, he has been stuck with a Tubular Bells all his life and the sad part is that there are some very nice later albums but many people think he peaked with Tubular and that was it.
This return album is ok. Quite pop orientated with another vocalist and not him. There are two versions. One is a set of ten or so songs and a deluxe with a second cd of instrumental versions.
There's a song called, 'Nuclear' on it which I quite like, but it is SO similar to a song from King Crimson's first album, 'In the Court of the Crimson King'. (Which I love to bits.) I remember the words to the Crimson song .... 'Confusion, will be my epitaph.' Once you have that in your mind, Nuclear seems like it's based on it tbh.

Haven't heard the new one Ian, I'll investigate that. I've got a few of his albums.
My favourites are Amarok, Guitars, Music Of The Spheres (Dave would probably like that one if he hasn't already got it, it's a full-on classical piece), and Tubular Beats, which is a kind of 'remix compilation' with one half of York (a German trance duo). It's quite cool, especially if you like Trance.
I agree about him not really being known or appreciated for anything else apart from TB, which, as you say, is a shame.

I think it's out now. If not, it'll be very soon.

Hi EK, Thanks for the pointer - just D/Ling it now - your description does suggest that it's my sort of thing and I share your and Ian's opinion of Mr. Oldfield so looking forward to giving it a listen. Many thanks, Dave.

The new one is a collection of pop type songs rather than Oldfield's normal output. Less of him and features another singer. It's not what I'd call one of his best tbh.
If you get the deluxe version with the instrumental versions, they sound like karaoke backings for the songs. A bit disappointing imo.
