I distinctly remember the release of the first YES album which I loved at the time and basically wore my LP out. What I loved was the way that their compositions developed and how they seemed on the edge of musical virtuosity. Their music logically developing into these amazing frenzies of action with the old squeaky voice of Jon topping it off.
I bought every release, really enjoying their development with some minor disappointments in Squashed Tormato type albums, where I felt the experimental aspect of their music was fading. (Although I'm sure that there are fans who like those albums too)
So this new one wasn't high on my priorities of listening, since I saw them live a few years back and thought that it wasn't that great tbh. Overblown, too loud, and ragged playing which wasn't very clearly defined at the venue. All loud and overpowering.
This album is a disappointment to me. The experimentation of old is gone. It's no longer edgy. It's too comfortable and relaxed. Some numbers almost sound like relaxed little folk songs. Sometimes, cliche in the use of chords appear - you expect it to do something ....... And it does. Such a let down. Way too predictable for a YES album.
Everything is played so nicely, but the album sounds retrospective, laid back and more like easy listening. It reminds me of the path that Emerson, Lake and Palmer took, where their later albums seemed so cosy and more aimed at the hit market; ultimately leading to their end.
Great pity. YES were far greater than this. I'd go as far to say that this album is 'dreary'!!
