A nice surprise. What really struck me about this album was just how clean it sounds on a good set up. Getting things back to running here in the new house and this album is just gorgeous to listen to technically as well as musically.
It's prog rock with a tinge of jazz every now and then, but the balance of the sounds and the effort that has gone into production has paid off with an effortless recording.
Prog rock, not being played loud and distorted, but really under control with precision players. There are very short bursts of real brilliance in their playing, but the album has a real feeling that care has been taken over production. Placing on speakers is very precise and on headphones, pretty well much, what I would hear on my earpieces before it gets mangled by speakers out in the auditorium.
No masses of reverb to tart up the sound. Clean recording with well defined positioning and playing that is never flat out. Very much under control and clean.
The music might not appeal to some since it's almost 'stadium' like without the grandeur and is more intimate, which is why to me, it sounds like the feed straight from the mixing desk without too much processing.
I've never heard Minor Giant before, but they sound like a lot of care and thought has gone into their work; even to the point where the more flamboyant sections never get too loud or go over the top.
Pleasant listening, this one.
