I have a re-issue copy of this and tbh, I find the album very underwhelming.
It tells the famous story and all that, but for me, the music just doesn't connect with any form of drama in the story. It's a kind of romanticised piece that tells parts of the story in words and is followed by a piece of music that just doesn't connect with what's been said.
The end result for me is a piece that just lacks drive and wanders through the story as though it's a walk in the park.
Large forces in that there is a large orchestra and choir with Rick doodling away on all kinds of electronica, but it has the same lack of effect on me as I had when I first heard it all those years ago.
Rick is a great player, but as far as composition goes, I find his stuff a little lacking. This album is a great example to me of his poor composition craft. The composition I like the most from him, and even then, it's not great, is the Six Wives of Henry VIII. The music at least communicates what it is supposed to be describing.
I've had a bad run of albums recently if I'm honest. This re-release just isn't worth bothering with imo. It's piss poor musically but played very nicely. It communicates nothing emotional and really isn't good for Rick's reputation. I can't believe he'd hold this up as some kind of masterpiece.
If only he'd go back to YES since their recent album was also a let down. He's turned to popularist TV as a kind of eccentric presenter and seems to be clawing back money via these releases that just are not the Rick of old.
It's around and if it sparks a memory off in you, I'd leave it alone. Oh for the YES of old even if Rick puts on the old capes and dresses like a lady. They were so good in those days, but nowadays, they seem like a shadow of themselves and Rick is wasting away ......
