About a month ago my wife had looked at my headphone stash and asked me what one I used most. I thought at first she was going to follow up my answer with "Well why don't you get rid of the rest?" But she was just curious. This got me thinking.
What's the headphone you pick up almost without thinking about it? The one you automatically go to? Concerning home hi-fi, not portable, what's your go-to headphone? I don't mean your most expensive, or most comfortable or whatever, I mean what's the one you use the most?
I thought I would carry out a little experiment. I decided to keep a 'headphone diary' over a period of four weeks. Just jot down what headphone I used and for how long. Well the period finished last night (12th September), and the results surprised me.
Before I started, on 12th August, I made out this list of the headphones I thought I used the most, in order of head-time for each can.
1. Sennheiser HD-600 (most used)
2. Beyerdynamic DT-150
3. Sony ZX-1000
4. Beyerdynamic DT-990
5. AKG K-240 Sextett (least used)
In reality, the running order for head-time for my cans (according to my notes) is actually :-
1. Beyerdynamic DT-990
2. Sennheiser HD-600
3. AKG K-240 Sextett
4. Sony ZX-1000
5. Superlux HD 681/Grado SR-80 (roughly tied)
I had always thought I used my Senns the most, but in reality it was the Beyers (by a good margin).
I also thought I used my Beyer DT-150's a lot more than I did, but they were about 7th or 8th on the list. Turns out I listen to my Goldring DR-150's more!
Also didn't realise I listen to my old Grado's as much as I obviously do. Maybe it's because they're modded to within an inch of their life, with single-side cable entry, buttons removed, jumbo pads, new grills, all the hole-mods etc, etc.
Interesting little experiment . . .
