Floyd's music always has a serious tinge of sadness to it to my ears. I always think that there is an underlying 'depression' within their music and I guess that's part of their attraction.
This is a curious album in that it uses recordings from early 1993 with their keyboard player, Richard Wright who died very sadly, not long ago. They put this album together and added new material as well.
There are tinges of the old sound and at times for me, echoes of older albums and sounds used before too. It seemed at first like a return to the 'Wish You Were Here' sound with a better quality of sound, but after a few songs, I felt that there were just echoes of quite a few albums, including 'Ummagumma' at one point in 'Skins'. Almost up to 'Careful With that Axe Eugine'!!!
Lots of drones and long held passages with soundscapes. Not much in the way of vocals. Some may well think that this album is indulgent. On first listen, I feel that there is a bucket load of nostalgia going on; in some ways very typical Floyd and in others a little rambling. (And dare I say it .... A bit old hat)

The Pink Floyd sound really hasn't aged very well, has it? I found this album over-indulgent & boring. It's way too long too, considering nothing really happens in it. Even the production isn't particularly stellar in my opinion.

Exactly. It's starting to lose the appeal in a way and I wasn't sure why. As you say, I found it very indulgent almost 'unprepared' in that it sounds like aimless doodling at times. The kind of thing you might do in order to compose a new album, but more thought would go into it in order to 'sharpen' it up.
This sounds like a quick improvisation in a studio and it's been left at that. I can't see it doing that well, other than people like me, listening for the old Floyd flair, but imo, this album has lost its way.
