A few years ago when I was a member of the other place, I carried out a gain adjustment mod to my V-2, namely, replacing the 27K resistors in the R107 and R207 positions with resistors of value 47K (IIRC). This gave the V-2 a much smoother and more linear (is that the right word?) grip on the volume. What used to happen was the gain came on in a nice, predictable, regular fashion, and then when the volpot got to about 1 or 2 o'clock, all hell broke loose and the gain poured on, such that it was difficult to get a nice happy medium. When you were listening loud, what with the varying levels of recorded material, you would regularly be turning the vol up and down, looking for that 'sweet-spot'.
Replacing the resistors with higher values had the effect of 'turning everything down (like a pre-amp), so there was more useable travel on the vol-pot.
I've now completed the mechanical mods to my Fostex T-40 RP's ( sheeps wool and 2 mm felt), and the sound is much improved with just these mods alone. This in preparation for receiving a T-40 active filter from Frans, after Christmas. I had hoped to buy it before-hand, but Christmas presents, new Nordost speaker cable (oh, my bleeding credit card!), and new LED lights for the kitchen, meant something had to give; and what gave was the filter that Frans was building for me. Still, I'll go ahead with it in January once my bank account has cooled down.
BTW, from my point of view, I can't see what all the fuss is about ref. the stock cable. Whether you guys have been unfortunate, or I've been very lucky, my cable has had no problems with microphonics, jacks falling out, etc. So I've stuck with the stock cable.
Anyhoo, back to the V-2.
Trying the newly-modded T-40's with my V-2 made it abundantly clear that I needed more power. I had always thought that my V-2 just about got away with driving the 600 ohm K-240 Sextett's with the skin of it's teeth, and that in an ideal world it would be nice to have some headroom. I mean I was listening to the Sextett's at 3 and 4 o'clock! The same seemed to be happening with the T-40's. They need some serious power! I had to really crank the V-2 to drive them to realistic levels. And yet I had always thought the V-2, whilst not the most powerful head-amp in the world by any means, was not exactly 'underpowered'. I'm not sure of the V-2's power specs (Frans would probably know the stats here), but it just goes to show how much a simple 10 minute mod can drastically change the performance of a piece of kit. So I removed the 47K resistors and replaced them with the original 27K versions.
Result? My volco is not as smooth as it was with most of my headphones, but still perfectly useable. With care!!
But now it will drive the T-40's to levels where I give up before the amp does. Same goes for the my AKG K-240 Sextett's, I can now run them at levels so loud that I have got to turn them down to a more comfortable place when listening to them for longer than a track or two.
