Could be worse. You could have nuclear subs beside you. Oh, wait.. Don't talk to me about the clunking fist. Total fanny who should be in the Hague. So where did you grow up, Penicuik? Don't mention the subs.... Never voted for Brown but to give him his dues he did work hard for his constituents. Grew up in Edinburgh mate. From the age of 4 or so we lived on the outskirts so only a mile or so away from the ski centre.

We have Ospreys fly over during migration occasionally. There was a red kite up over the house yesterday and a buzzard got beat up by the crows. What a wimp. He nearly came down. I look out onto the North Downs and on a good day, can see the Southe Downs north of Brighton. I've been outin thegarden all week this week. It's been hot down here. Rain today for first time in quite a while. Decided to fly down to Cornwall and then fly across to Scilly Isles for Summer break. That'll make a change. Renting a house over there. Nice because it's still UK and will still have phone and internet and TV that I understand!!!! Do you have a plane or am I reading too much into that? No. I booked flights on two little ones. Much cheaper. Also difficult to park them on the Scilly Isles. Thieves get everywhere. You're giving me deja vu. I once told someone else in Scotland that I was flying up to a job in Norwich to save time and he got all nasty, so all I own up to nowadays is a bicycle.

A bicycle? With two wheels? So bourgeois! I have a bike too but I don't get to use it much where I live now.

Where you are is radioactive too, that's not good. I know a guy from another forum, who lives close to Dounreay. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DounreayLovely landscape up there. You can have a quite detailed look with Google Streetview. You wouldn't believe that a large area surrounding the old reactors is polluted with uranium and plutonium fragments, when looking at pictures of the area. Dounreay on Google MapsSuch things make me sad. We are not a bit better over here in Switzerland: Lucens Reactor AccidentThe Lucens reactor was built into a small mountain (more exactly in a kind of bunker). This was the main reason why the accident (a nuclear meltdown) had only a small impact on the environment.

I had no idea Switzerland has a nuclear power station. Why? We have five nuclear power stations over here. Nuclear power is a part of our electricity "mix", which relies also on hydropower and to a lesser extent on other forms renewable energy (geothermal, solar, wind, biogas etc.). Oil, natural gas and coal are also used, but their percentage is rather small. Switzerland has/had also a few research reactors. Lucens was partially a research reactor, but also with the production of electricity in mind. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_SwitzerlandNuclear energy is somewhat risky, but it gives also some independency to a small country like Switzerland, which has no direct access to fossil energy (all oil, gas etc. is imported). We are one of the few countries with the ability to go 100% green regarding electricity, but it will be a long way to go. Electricity companies in Switzerland fear renewable energy somewhat, because it would be local/decentralised (without a need for big electricity corporations). Our nuclear plants are very old though and certainly a risk. We've had a poll about nuclear energy many years ago and people did vote for a moratorium for new nuclear plants. Below the line, nuclear energy was something that was mainly an advantage for the electricity corporations, while the tax payer has to pay for the hidden costs (ultimate disposal, dismantling of old plants). Of course, there are reserves for disposal and dismantling, but everyone knows that it will not be sufficient to cover all costs. In other words: Nuclear energy in Switzerland is a high risk fraud. Originally, there have been plans for TEN nuclear plants, but the accidents in "Three Mile Island" and "Chernobyl" made it almost impossible to convince the public for such plans. Instead we have bought nuclear electricity from France. France relies almost exclusively on nuclear power. A few of their plants are producing electricity for us. It is/was a kind of "outsourcing". BTW: We've had a nuclear program in the 60's. That's the reason why we've bought Mirage III fighters back then, which are fast enough to deliver free fall bombs. The nuclear program died together with Lucens, which was an important part of it. The reactor in Lucens was a proprietary development and they had also in mind to export such power stations. Switzerland had partners for its nuclear program: Israel and South Africa. We've left that cooperation first and without the bomb. South Africa has abandoned its nuclear program much later and Israel... you know... they are still in the "business". The whole story is more or less an open secret. No officials will admit it, but everyone knows. "Mühleberg" will be the first plant to be dismantled and it is the plant with the highest risk. "Benzau" 1 and 2 are very old and also rather risky. IIRC, "Mühleberg" and "Leibstadt" are quite similar to the plants in Fukushima (both use US technology). I can see the cloud of the cooling tower of the "Gösgen" plant, when looking out of one of my windows. They've sent me iodine pills at home. "Nuclear energy is save, but just in case... you know..."
