I can get an equal amount of sonic joy from a KSC75 directly out of a player (or the modified Philips as well) as when listening to the HD800 (on a Kameleon, not stock) while listening to music 'casually'.
Yet, when I sit down for it and 'want' to hear 'everything' the (EQ'ed) HD800 'reveals' more on the better recordings. Easier to listen to when I want to listen 'deeper', you don't have to 'strain the brain' as much. Like trying to find something in a box of stuff with much less other stuff in it (as an anology I read somewhere)
I do think not everyone has the same listening habits and preferences though. Some like music more than 'sound/fidelity' where others may have reversed priorities (on occasion ?)
I tend to enjoy music itself more than ultimate fidelity (not an high-end equipment whore as it were) but in the right 'mood' do get somewhat more 'enjoyment' if the music is reproduced 'better' and experience an increase in musical enjoyment... if that makes sense.

I have slowly come around to this way of thinking myself Frans, I was obsessed with the equipment over the music but not any more. Building that A/B demo box turned it all around for me - I now just want to hear the music. Oh one problem with that, I blew up one of my mono amps over christmas You wont belive it Frans - after I tested the toroid for the ESL's I re-connected my speaker cables totally wrong way around and come Christmas day when I had some spare time to listen, I switched it on to a fizzle and nothing out the speaker. I swapped the other mono amp to check to make sure the speaker was ok and thankfully they were ok. So got any Ideas what I may have blown up?

So got any Ideas what I may have blown up? Hard to say .. maybe arrange a skype session or something like that as it will require some measurements to determine what may need replacing.

However..... although i`m guilty of listening to... and purchasing far too many HP`s to be fully sane . . . I laughed at that Mick. Doesn't that just describe most of us on here?

Looks like the hd800s may have calmed the top end slightly.... Red is old, green is new version. Looks like just a 4khz dip is biggest nasty. Bit unusual to have a dip at 10khz. Isn't it more normal to try and get this aligned with 1khz?

That's a solid improvement right there.

About 5db less at 6khz. That'll take a bit of its sting away. A bit more above 10 kHz too, around 15khz.

I dont know if you remember helping me out when I blew the same amp up 4 years ago? but that was on RG site? rockgrotto.proboards.com/thread/8473/200-mono-amp-repair-upgradeI have a pretty good knowledge of the amp so meaurements should not be a problem? I had a spare hour today and had a peek inside, hoping that I may have blown one of the two fuses - no such luck:'( I could not see anything obviously brown and burnt out but it was only a quick look. I will start a new thread as this is totally off topic to the Senn HD800. BTW have you had a chance to measure that Traffo yet? just curious no rush as I know you are an very busy man. Thanks again Frans PS going to have to stop working on gear when I am tired and in a rush - making silly mistakes, its not like me I am usually very thorough.

Sorrodje's measurements are quite off in an absolute sense. The relative differences though are clearly visible. The 6kHz peak (the most offending one) is lowered by 5dB which is more than the 'Anax mod' does. That 5dB is similar to what the Kameleon does but the treble peak higher up is not lowered in the HD800S. The resonance at 6kHz is probably also a lot shorter as Purrins experiments with his resonantor show and the CSD's indicate. The Kameleon lowers the second peak as well though and adds the missing sub-bass. HD800S is quite a bit more expensive than the normal HD800 and owners need to sell or trade in their old investment. The hyper detail and wide soundstage is due to that elevated 10kHz part though so it seems the HD800S just removes the most offending part (the 6kHz peak) while keeping the rest untouched.
Yes the HD800S is an improvement but still too bright acc. to those that heard it and still somewhat lean on real subbass (bass is good though)
4kHz dip is very real though. Most headphones have such a dip at that point (T50RP, the old one for instance). It lowers the 'presence' somewhat.
Dips aren't nearly as sound degrading as peaks are.

I've been looking to see whether the hd800 takes a price drop, but so far, they seem to be sold as two separate models with the 'option' of the s model reducing the top end. I noticed one UK retailer stating that the hd800s goes higher and lower in frequency response than the hd800. Bit naughty.
There might be a run of second hand hd800 headphones soon!!

I don't think the HD800s has been officially launched in the UK yet? Sure I read February so possibly dealers can keep prices at current levels for now, as I'm sure there'll still be folk who either want to buy something now or who walk in with a budget in mind, but not a specific headphone, and ask for recommendations.
Might see some reductions after that though as I can't see many folk opting for the HD800 when there's a 'new & improved' version readily available for £100 more. Heck you can't even buy a proper (cough) cable for that sort of money!!
I expect we'll see an upturn in second hand HD800 though. Good time to be a buyer I think as used prices can only go one direction.
