I need to find a way to listen to the HD800 with and without filter.
Frans: Can you make a couple of MP3s that I could listen to on another set of headphones (ones I have), that would give me a feel for if I would like the HD800 with filter?

I can make 2 recordings (will have some hum in it) one with and one without filter of a stock HD800.
You would have to listen to that on good speakers (maybe the HD580) and would only need to listen to changes made in tonality. The sound quality is hard to capture on other headphones as they add/remove things that may be strong or weak points of the HD800
Don't know when I have time to set this up so may take a while.

Interesting (at least to me). I have a stock HD-650 on loan from SABF and compared to my ~15 year old HD-580, I very much prefer the 580 to the 650. The 650 sounded congested compared to the 580. I suspect this is because the 580 is more like the 600 than the 650??
I am wondering if the HD800 with filter will be closer to the HD600/580 than the 650. Any comments Frans?
Thanks in advance,
-Tim

Thanks in advance, -Tim The HD580 and HD600 are as good as the same. HD650 will sound slightly 'thicker' and may have slightly less 'clarity'. If you like the HD580 and K701 sound the HD650 may be a tad to 'warm'. The HD800 on Kameleon is a bit like the HD600 but with subbass and the 'edge' the HD580 has is gone. HD800 will sound a bit more spacious, realistic and less 'strident' yet have more than enough clarity. The differences between Kameleon HD650 and HD800 are there. Both have stronger and weaker points, which one prefers may be personal. I have HD650 'Kameleon' file which you could play through the HD650 and hear the difference with the 'stock' sound. The HD650 compensation is quite subtle though.

Thanks Frans! I need to find a way to listen to a stock HD800. I am guessing the HD800 / HD800 with Filter comparison files you'll work up later should at least tell me if I think I think the sound is "congested" or not. I didn't really like the 650 at all.

Nothing congested about the HD800, very dynamic and 'open' (on Kameleon). Just not 'hyper detailed' any more but 'normal detailed'

Hi Frans, I have had an older 650 with the softer, flatter pads, with the white drivers, a newer 650 with the harder pads and while I liked the sound of the newer 650 better, it was not as comfortable, sold both phones bought a 700 and liked that one better, than either 650. Bought a Beyer T1 and that one really shone, but developed the muddy left driver problem, returned them and got the Senn 800. Not the newer S version, did not want the rolled off treble or elevated slightly muddy base on the new S. The thing with the 800's it seems Senn made a change somewhere in the early 40000 serial numbers and the base is solid and the treble is not as spikey as the one I heard at first, sometime ago. Mine are in the late 40000 serial numbers, Amazon had them for a $1000.00 so not as bad as the new ones. Did not want a used one, as having had the various Senn phones the difference in the older models of the same series changed some. Confirmed these were of the later series serial numbers, and am enjoying these immensely. Using an Ember 1 with supercharger, dual 6j5's, Emotiva Dac, and JRiver 21 and the Sonarworks plugin. Changing the various settings on the vst gives a pretty flat freq, and elevating the bass 2 db has helped as well. Convinced me time to sell 700's now. Have an Elise amp on order a few more weeks out, should really shine on it. Of course this is my own experience others may find it different for them.

Mine is a very early one: 2264
The only change I am aware of is a pad change but mine has new pads so should be on par with later ones. Both Tyll and Purrin measured several over the years and results are quite consistent treble wise with just slight differences in the treble peak.
The HD800S isn't rolled off in the treble, the 6kHz peak is only a few dB lower. Indeed the bass differs making it somewhat darker.
I saw you used Sonarworks which will give it the same sound sig as via the Kameleon. With EQ they don't sound that great to me (they do have qualities without it)
The HD700 is tonally 'similar' to the HD800 but looses just slightly on technicalities. Never heard an HD700 myself.
So yes, with EQ the HD800 is great sounding.

I love comparing headphone fr and a comparison with a k550 shows the K550 looks almost rolled off compared to the hd800 in the treble!!! Both with a peak at a similar place as well.

I got a good price on the HD800 this past weekend ($999) and just got notification that they're in the mail with deliver scheduled for Thursday.
Had a chance to listen to the HD800 when I visited Frans a couple of weeks ago and they really show promise with the filter. I'm looking forward to an extended listening session. It would be a dream if I like them better than the K812 because I like the K812 significantly more than any other headphones I have heard, including the LCD-3 which does not come close.
I like bright headphones but I have a spare filter pcb and I'll be shopping for the HD800 filter components also.
I wanted to try the Superlux HD662 EVO, which also sounded great, but shipping was about the same as the cost of the headphones so I put those on hold for the time being.
Talking about opportunities with headphones. An eBay seller 12 miles from me, has a pair of pristine TH900 for $750. I still am thinking about these.

I like the th900. Worst thing about them is the fact that they're so shiny and you kind of want to treat them with kid gloves. I'm also aware of people complaining about the cup joint nut coming apart. Soundwise, I really like it. Funnily enough, slightly similar to the d2000 which is a bit softer in the treble by comparison. I'd like to have a go with an hd800, but don't fancy spending that much on a headphone that I might get tired of. I quite like the k553 and that's lively up top. I get a very good seal so in fact, I do get a very low bass from them. I know that some feel that it has no bass, but it is very seal dependent, also, as I said, I have found inconsistencies with AKG headphones since I have bought multiple headphones in the past and they don't sound the same. Senns seem better in this respect so I imagine that hd800's are very consistent. I don't mind the treble being raised as long as it's not that harsh kind of treble that you can get in some headphones. I found the original K701 very harsh up top and couldn't really use it that much. I also enjoy the K712 a lot. Very smooth sounding. Frans said that you were going to see him but wasn't sure whether it happened due to circumstances. I might take a fishing rod to that canal one day!!!
