I don't blame you Simon. A new one can be had around £430 and that one with postage is getting too close to the £400 mark.I'd pay the difference and get a new one personally.

New Denons are selling now for £255 on Amazon, Simon. So you might get half of the cost of a dt1770. The Beyer can't be so easily used mobile though. It is difficult when you can't try headphones. The 1770 has the dt770 as a relative and there is a resemblance. I like the dt770, probably because I'm attuned to its sound. The 1770 is more refined I think, but same big bass. The dip around 5khz is an artifact from the measuring process.

Personally I'd take the DT150 over the DT770. Just sayin'. I've heard neither.

If you're not dropping a grand you're not doing it right --- Simon re. QC. I only briefly skimmed through the DT1770 thread on HF but if memory serves me right quite a few reports of channel imbalances or distortion in one driver. I'm sure some owners had to return more than once before they got a good pair. May of course just have been a dodgy batch. I'm surprised the used pair didn't sell quicker. They were still up yesterday lunchtime but I suppose the lack of pics on Amazon listings doesn't help sales.

I think as you said, the QC issues was a batch and seeing that we're all scattered all over the world, those issues were made very public. Rumours go like a forest fire. They looked very well made to me when I tried them.
Funny thing Gordon, I prefer the dt770 to the dt150 for use in the home. The dt150 is great for performing into in a recording situation, because it has thicker wiring and so the treble is slightly duller. That means that 'life' volume works well on them so you can actually perform more naturally with them, since you don't need to 'hold back'.
For lower level home listening, the treble of the dt770 is raised so it 'seems' to have more clarity and the big, deep bass is really nice. Kind of dt990 like but more 'colourful'. Imo, the DT770 is bypassed by many audiophiles because of its bass. They can't get past it, but for me the bass needs to be clearly there. That's why I also like the th900, because it gives a full bodied bass. Also why I'm not that keen on the hd650 without filter. It sounds very coloured to me with no 'substantial' low bass. With filtering, it's one of the best although I still like a fraction more sparkle in the top. That might be my ageing ears though.
You have to like bass a lot if you enjoy the dt770. BBC seems to love them, but that's probably a budget thing. You do also see DT150's though, mostly for loud monitoring. Mine were always eq'd and I found them underwhelming at home. Good, but don't have the sparkle of the DT770.
I wish I'd taken the DT770 with me to directly compare with the 1770. As far as value goes, again the DT770 is in the same position as the DT990. Really great value for money. Both with big hitting bass as well; dt770 a bit moreso though.

i am finding the dt770 really tempting only cos they are so cheap! and Ian likes them. must look to see if they are filterable!!! I asked Frans about the filtering Simon since he'll be sending one to me soon, with a little collection of filters. In fact, as luck has it, he did make a dt770 filter which is great news. I'll be using hd650, dt990, dt770 filters most of the time. My personal feeling is that the hd650 is the best of the bunch, so I may leave that one fitted and use the other two unfiltered. Stops me continually changing the chip and the hd650 is the one I least like without filter. I think there might be a bypass on the Kameleon that he's making for me. Not sure, but if it's there, that's what I'll be doing and just switching it in for the Senn. Otherwise, I might put another amp on my desk as well. www.juno.co.uk/products/beyerdynamic-dt770-pro-studio-headphones-250-ohm/386768-01/www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0016MNAAI?keywords=Dt770&qid=1455968046&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1I prefer the 250 ohm version myself.
