Right now I'm looking at CSR86xx-modules... Those seem like a good option, but then again, plans might change. Keeping things in their respective cans is a good idea considering the impact of volume. Wonder if I'll need an amp or not. Well, needs to be thought a bit more

Reviving this old thread a bit...
I'm not really using my 662Evo a lot. It simply hurts too much after just a short while. My ears are too big and get stuck under the pads. I know some tried HM5 pads, but these are a bit too small it seems. Now, since last year, Brainwavz has bigger pads, the XL's. Has anyone tried some of these? If not, any expert educated guesses which would go best with the 662Evo? There's the velours, the pleather (with holes on the inside of the pads), the hybrid pleather + velours where the skin touches (also with holes), or the most expensive sheepskin (without holes). Buying all 4 to try the out would set me back 140 EUR so can't do that.

The sound changes considerably with the different pads. They also have rouund pads these days.
The hybrid will most likely give the best results.
Have not measured the sheepskin. The velours will kill all the bass.

Thanks Frans! I'll order the hybrids and see what they do. They are round, these XL's, and should fit nicely

Finally, after two weeks of captcha's and the forum not loading properly after that, I can get back on here. Got the hybrids. They fit perfectly on the Evo, comfort goes through the roof with these, but they significantly change the sound. A lot less low end. Will have to play with Frans' mods and see if I can get them back, or else order the pleather/leather ones.

Got em. I ordered white but got black. Oh well.
Didn't bother to listen to them stock, I just modded them right away. Two plies of paper sounded too harsh to me (Cardiacs - Goodbye Grace), so I put three. Went back to two since three plies sounded too dull on some songs.
I like the bass. Sounds balanced to me.

Just wanted to update this thread and say that I sold my 662 EVOs recently and have a pair of Takstar Pro 82s on the way.
The EVOs were too bulky and uncomfortable for me. The sound was okay, but I ended up reaching for other headphones, which is always a bad sign. Grass is always greener and whatnot!

I ended up reaching for other headphones, which is always a bad sign. Grass is always greener and whatnot! I end up reaching for my 662 EVOs more than my AKG K240 mkII's. Mostly because of the bass extension. K240's are pretty shy in that matter.

Das passt aber weiss nicht ob dieses Kabel weniger mikrophonisch ist.

The problem is not so much with the cable. Yes, other cables will transmit less friction noise, but it will still be annoying. The problem is with the way it's connected to the cup. That's harder to fix It's easier to not move or use Ian's way (if i remember correctly) and make a loop around the cup and zip tie it.

I made a short extension cord with 3 thin separate wires inside a silicone sleeve and plug that into the headphone and the cable in the extension. The extension cord decouples mechanical sounds which works for me. But yes... the cable into the cup is the main problem.

I bought hd662 evo in February. They came without the felt disc in front of the driver. The stock sound is terrible, it's very thin and hollow, human voices are distant and unnatural. Very bright, treble oriented sound signature. Couldn't believe my unit is the same headset this topic is about. I've made then cheap measuring rig based on Dayton imm-6 microphone, some upholstery foam and CD with eva foam glued to it as a coupler. Long story short I've found there is a deep wide valley in FR from midbass to lower mids in both channels. ~13 dB lower volume at 200Hz than at 1kHz... Definitly it's not measurment artefact, fostex mk3 and ksc75 measured fine, haven't measured any closed headset though. Measured bass response curve is not compensated, both measurments are with velour stock pads. Attached graph shows frequency response before/after modding - some wool in the cups around the driver (very important, raised a few db that awful valley), 5 holes in the baffle blocked, 6th taped with transpore papertape, 2 plies of 3ply tissue under the foam disc. Altogether it has raised the problematic area by ~10dB. The sound is ok now, still a bit bright, midrange and upper bass are still slightly recessed. It's easily heard while doing fast sweeps from 1kHz to the bottom end in SineGen, slow sweeps aren't so obvious and revealing. I'm going to play with porting holes covered with white paper on the backside of the driver next. I have no idea if my findings are valid for all of the hd662evo units without felt disc. Bought very bad revision I guess. Attachments:

It takes a bit of work to improve these. One wonders why Superlux don't simply plugs the ports themselves instead of always using the same standard baffle with the same paper covering it.
Had 2 EVO's and they also were not the same. Silent revisions, production spread ?
The peak around 9kHz could be removed with an LCR filter which only addresses that peak.
